TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – The Royals selected five players on the first day of the 2025 MLB Draft.
IMG Academy (FL) second baseman/outfielder Sean Gamble was Kansas City’s first selection of the 2025 MLB Draft.
Gamble is a native of Iowa. He was ranked as the #27 prospect in the draft by MLB.com. He is committed to Vanderbilt. Gamble was taken with the Royals’ first pick at #23 overall.
The Royals then selected Wesleyan Christian Academy (NC) shortstop Josh Hammond with the 28th overall pick. Hammond was rated as the #26 prospect in the draft by MLB.com.
Kansas City’s next pick came in the 2nd round, where they selected Tulane right-handed pitcher Michael Lombardi with the 61st overall pick. Lombardi registered a 2.14 ERA with 73 strikeouts in 42 innings primarily out of the bullpen in 2025.
The Royals then used their Competitive Balance Round B pick to select Texas A&M left-handed pitcher Justin Lamkin 71st overall. Lamkin recorded a 3.95 ERA with 98 strikeouts in 84.1 innings across 15 starts in 2025.
The final pick of the opening night for the Royals was Alhambra High School (Calif.) right-handed pitcher Cameron Millar. Kansas City selected him with the 97th pick in Round 3.
