PITTSBURGH — In what might be right-hander Zac Gallen’s final start, he and the Arizona Diamondbacks are trailing the Pittsburgh Pirates and right-hander Paul Skenes, 3-0, after five innings on July 27 at PNC Park.
The Pirates scored a run in the second, capitalizing on the incredible speed of Oneil Cruz, and added two more in the third.
Meanwhile, Skenes has been his usually dominant self, giving up just three hits and a walk through five scoreless innings, striking out eight. He has worked out of jams in three separate innings.
With Cruz on first and nobody out in the second, the Pirates’ Tommy Pham dropped a single into center field. Cruz held up briefly coming around second but turned on the jets after that, never slowing down as he rounded third. He scored easily, seemingly catching the Diamondbacks by surprise with his aggressiveness.
The Pirates got three hits off Gallen to score two more runs in the third.
Alek Thomas reinstated from bereavement list
The Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated outfielder Alek Thomas from the bereavement list ahead of their series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
There was no corresponding move; Thomas takes the spot vacated by outfielder Randal Grichuk, who was traded to the Kansas City Royals during the game on July 26.
Meanwhile, manager Torey Lovullo said left-hander Jalen Beeks (back) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno on July 29.
Right-hander Shelby Miller continues to progress from the back discomfort he felt in recent days and is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session on July 28.
