FORT DODGE — In a state tournament full of incredible gutsy performances, Izzie Moore had to finish off a gutsy senior season by leading Wayne to the program’s first state softball championship.
Ultimately, two clutch hits would prevent Moore from the dream ending to an incredible prep softball career. Two-out, two-run hits in the first two innings by Sydney Lovrein and Paige Kampman in the first two innings provided third-ranked Clarksville with all the run support that Lovrein would needing the pitching circle, lifting the Indians to a 4-1 win over the top-ranked Falcons in the Class 1A finals to close out the Iowa High School State Softball Tournament.
After giving up four runs on six hits in the first two innings, Moore allowed just three more batters to reach base over the final five innings including four consecutive hitless innings to finish the game. Wayne, however, never recovered from the four-run deficit getting the tying run to the plate just once after Ella Whitney’s RBI single in the fifth cut the Clarksville lead to 4-1 before Lovrein forced Ava Whitney into an inning-ending pop up.
Clarksville finishes a state-championship winning season with a final record of 31-4. Wayne finishes with a record of 27-3, matching the program’s best finish in a state tournament with a second-place showing including all-tournament performances by Moore, Ava Whitney and Allie Jo Fortune.
