The San Diego Padres beat the St. Louis Cardinals 9-2, and the Dodgers lost 4-3 at Boston Monday. The results left the second-place Padres four games behind the Dodgers.
Manny Machado racked up four hits and three RBIs Sunday to lead the Padres past the Cardinals.
All three Southern California teams were to be in action Monday in series openers, with all three at home. The Dodgers were set to host the Cincinnati Reds, the Padres were set to go against the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Angels were set to play against the Texas Rangers.
