CLEVELAND, Ohio — Lane Thomas was spotted in the Guardians clubhouse Monday wearing a cast on his right foot as he continues to recover from plantar fasciitis that has sidelined him twice this season, most recently on July 6.
The outfielder received an injection last week and was fitted with the walking boot Friday, which he expects to wear for approximately two weeks.
“I don’t think there’s anything crazy to it,” Thomas said of the boot. “Just trying to get a lot of the inflammation out without being able to move it for a long period of time.”
Thomas explained that the treatment approach aims to “limit all mobility” to help reduce inflammation in his foot. He anticipates having the boot removed sometime over the weekend, pending an upcoming doctor’s appointment.
“I think I take it off sometime over the weekend. I have another appointment with the doctor to talk about it and then hopefully get moving around again,” Thomas said.
While sidelined, Thomas has focused on maintaining a positive mindset and supporting his teammates.
“Just trying to be there for the guys and what they’re dealing with,” Thomas said. “I just think try to be a good teammate. I think that’s important. When I was with the Cardinals, Paul Goldschmidt was always times when you’re struggling or down or hurt. It’s like it’s the only thing you can do is be a good teammate.”
The timing of the injury is particularly challenging for Thomas, who is set to become a free agent after this season. When asked about the impact on his contract year, Thomas acknowledged the unfortunate timing.
“It’s not ideal, but that’s just part of it,” he said. “Just look forward in the offseason and see what goes on.”
Thomas has also found a silver lining in his recovery time, noting, “I’ve gotten to spend some time with family and stuff too, which is, that’s obviously not what you want to be doing, but it’s a positive.”
