MINNEAPOLIS — With the Red Sox just three outs away from a potential 4-3 win over the Minnesota Twins, the threat of heavy rain and the potential for lightning forced a delay in the game in the middle of the ninth.
The Red Sox had just taken a one-run lead in the top of the inning, but before they could take the field for the bottom of the inning, umpires waved out the grounds crew to unfurl the tarp and protect the field as rain began and heavy winds swirled.
The Sox were about to turn to Jordan Hicks to close out their second straight game, but he never got to the mound as the grounds crew raced onto the field.
Some rain was in the forecast for late Monday night, though officials had hoped that the game could be completed before it arrived.
