Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez was hit on the right hand by a pitch and exited the game on Monday at the Detroit Tigers.
Suarez faced Tigers reliever Will Vest in the ninth inning, and Vest delivered a high-and-inside sinker at 96 mph that caught him. Suarez jumped up and shook his hand out. After a quick evaluation from the athletic trainer, Suarez quickly pulled his hand back and headed for the dugout.
Manager Torey Lovullo told reporters postgame that Suarez was going in for X-rays. Suarez then told reporters that the X-rays on his right index finger came back negative and he’ll undergo more testing.
The ballgame ended two batters later, as the D-backs fell 5-1. Arizona dropped to a season-worst five games under .500 at 51-56.

“The good news is that the X-rays were negative, but it still obviously hurt,” Suarez, who was not bending the finger, told reporters. “There are more tests scheduled for (Tuesday) and we will go from there. I’ll come back as quickly as I can.”
Diamondbacks (Suarez in particular) getting hit by pitches up-and-in has been an unsightly theme of the summer. Corbin Carroll went on the injured list after such an instance last month, and Suarez was hit in the hand by White Sox pitcher Shane Smith twice, once in the All-Star Game.
“He’s very tough and he never even winces,” Lovullo said. “When he reacts like that, you know it isn’t good.”
The timing is a significant element of this situation, as the trade deadline is on Thursday and Suarez is considered the top power hitter on the market.
The Tigers, ironically, have been tied to Suarez in trade rumors, as the veteran fielded questions about the deadline before Monday’s game.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported on Monday morning that Detroit would “love to finalize” a trade for Suarez before the D-backs leave town on Wednesday.
Suarez, an All-Star this season with 36 home runs and 87 RBI, is in the last year of his contract and has drawn the interest of at least 12 other teams.
How did the Diamondbacks lose to the Tigers?
The Diamondbacks completed 25 innings of baseball without scoring a run, a streak that ended with an Alek Thomas solo home run in the eighth inning on Monday.
The home run proved inconsequential to the final score, as Arizona dropped its third straight game. The Diamondbacks have scored two runs in a four-game span for only the second instance in club history, last doing so in August 2000.
Tigers pitching prospect Troy Melton made his second career start and dominated with seven scoreless innings, giving up five hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Arizona did not create many scoring chances, but it finished 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position, dropping to 0-for-22 with RISP on the road trip.
D-backs starter Eduardo Rodriguez had another start of highs and lows, giving up five earned runs in six innings to elevate his ERA to 5.63. Third baseman Andy Ibañez and catcher Dillon Dingler went yard off the lefty.
Rodriguez has allowed 18 home runs this season, more than the 15 he surrendered in 2023 for the Tigers in 60 fewer innings so far.
The first four frames of this game went about as poorly as possible for the Diamondbacks, who coughed up the first run of the game.
A dropped pop-up that glanced off Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s glove with two outs in the first inning brought home the first Detroit run, but only after Thomas’ throw bounced off baserunner Jahmai Jones’ helmet.

Down 2-0 in the fourth, Suarez saw a hanging slider that had game-tying home run written all over it. Suarez popped it up, screaming loud enough for the TV broadcast to pick it up as he smacked his bat away.
Detroit tacked on two runs in the bottom half to break the game open.
The series will continue on Tuesday at 3:40 p.m. MST with Brandon Pfaadt pitching for Arizona against Detroit All-Star right-hander Casey Mize.
