Cartaya was a former top prospect in the Dodgers organization, ranking as high as the team’s No. 1 prospect in 2022 and ’23, per MLB Pipeline.
However, Cartaya struggled to hit in 2023 and ’24, and ended up being designated for assignment this offseason and subsequently traded to the Minnesota Twins.

This year with Minnesota’s Triple-A affiliate, Cartaya went 5-for-59 (.085) with one home run, one run batted in and 40 strikeouts. He was then released by Minnesota last week and is now joining the Dodgers’ National League West rival.
The Giants have now signed two catchers who were formerly with the Dodgers organization this season. Last month, the Giants signed veteran Austin Barnes to a minor league deal. In 12 Triple-A games, Barnes is hitting .207 with an OPS of .510.
