Reds closer Emilio Pagán discusses series sweep of Tampa Bay Rays
Former Cincinnati Reds closer Alexis Diaz only threw eight pitches to four batters for the Dodgers against his former team in Los Angeles’ 5-4 win in the second game of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park.
It was all Diaz needed for his first win as a Dodger, in his first-ever appearance against the Reds.
Diaz, a 2023 National League All-Star for the Reds, jogged in from the visiting team’s bullpen to boos from the crowd. He got Austin Hays to ground out for the third out of the 7th inning, and retired Santiago Espinal, Spencer Steer and Connor Joe in order in the 8th.
The Dodgers scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 9th on Will Smith’s RBI double.
Diaz posted a 3.21 ERA in 196 appearances over 3+ seasons for the Reds, recording 75 saves. Traded by the Reds to the Dodgers in May for Mike Villani, Diaz hasn’t allowed a run in three appearances for Los Angeles.
