The trade deadline is only one day away, and the Pittsburgh Pirates have plenty of decisions left to make.
While it’s widely expected the Pirates will deal their rentals — Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Tommy Pham, Andrew Heaney and Caleb Ferguson — there are players controlled beyond this year that could also be moved. It’s a fine-line general manager Ben Cherington has to navigate, as he has repeatedly stated his goal is to get better in 2026.
Two trade targets that have generated plenty of interest are starting pitcher Mitch Keller and closer David Bednar. MLB.com recently released a list of proposals and has two two involved in a blockbuster trade.
MLB.com has the Detroit Tigers acquiring Keller and Bednar. In return, the Pirates would land four prospects — SS Bryce Rainer, OF Cris Rodriguez, 2B Max Anderson and LHP Jake Miller.
Rainer, Detroit’s No. 3 prospect and No. 34 overall in the top 100, is the headline. The 11th overall in the 2024 MLB Draft, Rainer is in Class-A Lakeland and carries a .288/.383/.448 batting line with five doubles, five home runs, 22 RBI and nine stolen bases in 35 games.
Rodriguez (Tigers No. 8 prospect) was one of the top prospects available in last year’s international cycle. The 17-year-old is off to a fast start in the Dominican Summer League with a .316/.338/.526 batting line, seven doubles, seven home runs and 26 RBI while going a perfect 9-for-9 in stolen bases in 38 games.
Anderson, who was drafted in the second round by the Tigers in 2023, is considered their ninth-best prospect. In 81 games with Double-A Erie this season, Anderson is slashing .318/.367/.523 with 25 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs and 59 RBI.
And finally, the lone pitcher in the proposed package is Miller, Detroit’s No. 14 prospect. The left-hander has been out since late April with an injury but posted a 2.12 ERA in four starts with Double-A to open the season. In 24 appearances/three starts last year, Miller went 9-3 with a 1.85 ERA and struck out 104 batters in 87.1 innings.
It’s an appealing trade package, but one the Pirates would likely say no to. Pittsburgh is focused on improving its offense as soon as possible, and Rainer and Rodriguez are both multiple years away from impacting the big-league club.
Instead of Rainer, the headliner from the Pirates’ perspective would likely be shortstop Kevin McGonigle or outfielder Max Clark. Both prospects are currently in Double-A.
