Jacob Misiorowski rallies Brewers past Cubs in Game 1 of series

Jacob Misiorowski pushed through a rough first inning but rallied the Brewers in an eventually win over the Cubs at American Family Field in Milwaukee on July 28, 2025.

It’s been a career season for Freddy Peralta.

But Wednesday afternoon, July 30, won’t be a start that the Milwaukee Brewers right-hander will want to save in the memory banks.

With a sweep of the Chicago Cubs tantalizingly close, Peralta instead turned in his worst start of the season en route to a 10-3 clunker of a loss for the Brewers in front of yet another sellout crowd at American Family Field.

The tone was set when Peralta (12-5) allowed a first-pitch home run to Michael Busch, and a four-run third inning by the Cubs (63-45) sealed the deal as the Brewers (64-44) were forced to settle for two of three wins against their rival and a one-game lead atop the National League Central Division standings.

Peralta’s four-inning start was his shortest since last July 6 at the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He allowed five hits, five runs and four walks while tying a season low with three strikeouts over 85 pitches in taking his first loss since June 3 – a span of 10 starts.

William Contreras hit a pair of solo home runs off Cubs starter Shota Imanaga, but other than that, it was a quiet game for Milwaukee’s offense.

Milwaukee hasn’t swept Chicago since taking four straight at Wrigley Field from Aug. 10-12, 2021.

The teams are tied, 4-4, in the season series now with an enormous five-game series looming from Aug. 18-21 at Wrigley Field.

Chicago won’t let up

DL Hall threw a 1-2-3 fifth inning but quickly ran into trouble in the sixth when pinch-hitter Justin Turner blooped a double to right with Dansby Swanson, up next, sending his own two-bagger to left-center that stretched the deficit back out to three runs.

Jared Koenig took over for Hall and two batters into his stint allowed a two-run double to Kyle Tucker, a walk and then hit Pete Crow-Armstrong, only to have Grant Anderson put out the fire.

The Cubs tacked on a couple final runs in the ninth on a Nico Hoerner sacrifice fly and Ian Happ homer against Easton McGee.

Another one for William Contreras

Imanaga retired seven of eight batters after the first-inning Contreras homer, only to give up another to the Brewers backstop – this one to right-center – closing the deficit to 5-2.

Peralta wasn’t given a chance to go back out for the fifth, leaving him with his shortest start since last July 6. He allowed five hits, five runs, four walks and struck out three over 85 pitches.

The offense tacked on another run in the fifth on a Blake Perkins double, Joey Ortiz single and Sal Frelick sacrifice fly that made it 5-3.

Cubs go back in front

A one-out single by Tucker in the third was followed by a Seiya Suzuki walk, then Crow-Armstrong smoked a ball just out of the reach of a diving Brice Turang to score Tucker.

Suzuki, who ended up at third with Armstrong-Crow at second, was thrown out at home trying to score on a chopper to Andrew Vaughn at first.

Peralta then walked Hoerner to load the bases, which ended up being a very bad move with rookie Moisés Ballesteros doubling into the gap in left-center to empty them and make it a 5-1 game.

Teams trade homers

Michael Busch ambushed Peralta, taking his first offering of the day out to right for a quick 1-0 Cubs lead.

Chicago got a couple runners on base after that, but Peralta worked his way out of the jam having allowed the lone run. He also struck out a pair, allowing him to move past Teddy Higuera and into third place in franchise history with 1,082.

Contreras then got his battery mate’s back in the bottom of the frame, sending a two-out solo homer out to left in a 1-2 count to tie it up.

It was the first time since June 14 Contreras had gone deep.
