The Giants trading Tyler Rogers came at a hefty price for the New York Mets — and president of baseball operations David Stearns knows it.
That price? A pair of top-12 Mets prospects, Blake Tidwell and Drew Gilbert, who both were in Triple-A – meaning the big leagues shouldn’t be too far away – and an already-in-the-majors relief pitcher in Jose Butto.
“They’re good players,” Stearns told reporters following Thursday’s MLB trade deadline. “There’s no question there’s good players. You know, proximity to the major leagues certainly factors into these types of deals. Look, we believe we traded a number of players who are going to play on TV and will continue to play on TV and I hope they do.”

The Mets, who are currently 62-47 and in first place in the NL East knew the time for a strong playoff push was this season and that’s exactly how they operated.
“We were in a position where we thought that these deals made sense, giving up good players to get players who maybe can help us in a little bit more concentrated fashion right now,” Stearns said. “Never easy decisions to make but we felt like and I felt like the right decisions to make right now.”
For the Giants, they’ll reap the reward of a package of MLB-level players – hopefully in the near future.
