Improves to 20-2 and will face defending state champion Wamego Tuesday
It took a fifth inning lead off double by Jai Rogers and a two-out single by Taylor Gustafson for the Chapman Lady Irish to gain control of game two to complete the doubleheader sweep of the St. Mary’s Lady Bears.
The two teams swapped leads back and forth three times in the early innings before Gustafson’s RBI to put the Irish up 6-5. Chapman came back with an insurance run in the fifth and added four more in the sixth to win 10-6.
In the opener, Chapman’s Madalynn Harold limited the Lady Bears to two hits in the 9-0 shutout win by the Lady Irish. McKenzie Leighty had a big day at the plate going four for four at the dish, scoring three times and driving in a run. Harold had two hits including a double and homerun and drove in two. Rogers had two hits including a triple and scored twice from the leadoff spot. Gustafson drove in a run with a double and Kennedy Scholz doubled driving in two. Anna Martinez, Olivia Harold and Kaci Heller also had hits for the Irish.
Madalynn Harold yielded only two hits while striking out 12 and walking one in her seven innings of work. Kaycee SinghDhillon took the loss for St. Mary’s allowing eight runs on 13 hits, striking out nine and walking one.
In the deciding game, St. Mary’s pushed across two runs in the top of the first before the Irish scored three in the first and one in the second. The Bears tied the game at 4-4 with two third inning runs and then took the lead again with a run in the fourth. Chapman tied the game in the fifth and then erupted for four runs in the sixth to take over.
Madalynn Harold went three for four at the plate with a homerun and two doubles driving in three runs and scoring twice. Teagan Ellis had three hits, Rogers doubled twice while Gustafson and Scholz also had two hits in the game driving in two.
Olivia Harold pitched the win for the Lady Irish allowing six earned runs on 11 hits. She walked eight and struck out nine. Hunter Poppelreiter took the loss allowing nine earned runs on 16 hits, walking four and striking out three. SinghDhillon had three hits for the Bears including a double driving in two. Poppelreiter had a pair of singles and three RBI.
The Irish moved to 20-2 on the season and will wrap the regular season hosting two-time Class 4A State Champion Wamego on Tuesday.
