The Texas Rangers have traded pitcher Codi Heuer to the Detroit Tigers for cash considerations, the team announced today.
The Rangers signed Heuer to a minor league deal in early April, and he has spent most of the season in AAA. The Rangers added him to their 40 man roster a couple of months ago when they needed an arm in the pen, and he was optioned after pitching in one game for Texas. Heuer seemed like someone whose 40 man roster spot was likely going to be needed in the very near future, and so sending him to the Tigers in exchange for cash considerations (presumably in excess of the waiver price) makes more sense than just waiving him after the deadline when his 40 man spot was needed.
With this move, the Rangers currently have 39 players on their 40 man roster, so there’s now an open spot if they trade for a reliever.
