Having been swept in San Diego ahead of their off day yesterday, the Mets (62-47) are set to host the Giants (54-55), a team they swept last weekend in San Francisco, for three games at Citi Field this weekend. And the teams’ bullpens will be a focal point during the series, as the Mets went heaviest on relief acquisitions at the deadline, one of which was Tyler Rogers, who they got from the Giants in a deal that included Jose Buttó as part of the package that went to San Francisco.
Despite their three-straight losses, the Mets have a 7-3 record in their past ten games and come into the series opener this evening with a half-game lead over the Phillies for first place in the National League East. The Giants are reeling, having lost six in a row and gone 2-8 in their last ten games to fall under .500. At six games back of the third Wild Card spot with two teams between them and the Padres, it makes sense that they were sellers at the deadline.
There’s not a ton of new information about the Giants since the Mets played them last weekend, but as a quick refresher, they’ve struggled to score runs with just 4.06 per game. And they’ve been pretty good at preventing runs, as they’ve given up just 4.02 per game.
Friday, August 1: David Peterson vs. Robbie Ray, 7:10 PM EDT on SNY
Peterson (2025): 121.0 IP, 101 K, 41 BB, 7 HR, 2.83 ERA, 3.34 FIP, 71 ERA-
If you had to pick the ace of the Mets’ staff right now, it would have to be Peterson, as he’s been very good and continues to be the only starting pitcher in the rotation who is capable of going deep—beyond five innings being the new low bar for that—in games. Peterson went six innings and allowed just one run in his start against the Giants last weekend in San Francisco.
Ray (2025): 129.0 IP, 134 K, 52 BB, 15 HR, 2.93 ERA, 3.76 FIP, 73 ERA-
Ray gave up two runs in five-and-two-thirds innings against the Mets his last time out, and he’s been much better—and healthier—in his second season with the Giants than he was in his first. It’s a bit surprising that he wasn’t on the trade block with just one year of team control left beyond this one, but the Giants probably figure they can compete next season and can always flip him at that deadline if things go awry.
Saturday, August 2: Kodai Senga vs. TBD, 4:10 PM EDT on SNY
Senga (2025): 85.2 IP, 82 K, 41 BB, 7 HR, 2.00 ERA, 3.71 FIP, 50 ERA-
Although his starts have been shorter than ideal, Senga has been very good this year when he’s been on the mound. A season that started so well that he could’ve been in the Cy Young mix was derailed by a hamstring injury that cost him a month and now sees him having his workload significantly managed, but keeping him healthy for the postseason would be nice.
TBD
Even Roster Resource doesn’t have a projected pitcher for this game. Maybe the Giants go with a bullpen game or call someone up from the minors for the start.
Sunday, August 3: Frankie Montas vs. TBD, 1:40 PM EDT on SNY
Montas (2025): 29.2 IP, 26 K, 8 BB, 6 HR, 5.46 ERA, 4.88 FIP, 138 ERA-
Montas struggled his last time out and has been roughly the same pitcher that he was in 2024, which isn’t a good thing.
TBD
Roster Resource has Carson Whisenhunt, who recently made his major league debut with rather unsuccessful results, penciled in to start the series finale.
