CLEVELAND, Ohio — When in the eye of the storm, sometimes it’s best to do laundry.
Steven Kwan found himself in that exact spot Thursday. While MLB’s hurricane of trade rumors swirled around him, Kwan and his wife Samantha did laundry just in case the Guardians traded him before the 6 p.m. deadline and they had to catch a flight out of town.
The trade never happened, and Kwan was in the lineup Friday night batting leadoff against a rebuilding Twins team that was turned inside out as eight of their players were traded on Thursday.
Kwan had another means of distraction on Thursday besides laundry. The Steven Kwan Baseball Camp took place on Thursday at League Park.
Rain, however, canceled the on-field activities. About 250 campers signed up for the day, but with a steady rain falling Kwan had to take things inside for pictures and a question-and-answer session. Yes, he was asked about the possibility of being traded.
“I told them the truth,” said Kwan. “I told them I’ll find out when you find out.”
Kwan enjoyed the camp.
“The camp was fun, a nice way to keep my mind off things,” said Kwan. “The rain was a super bummer.
“We had to pivot because we had a bunch of baseball stuff planned. About half of the kids left because of the rain, but we tried to talk with every kid who stayed and get a picture taken.”
When the camp ended, Kwan went home and started doing laundry.
“My wife and I tried to keep it loose and easy,” said Kwan. “We made sure we had some laundry in case we had to go. If not, we were ahead of the game for the next road trip. It’s win, win.”
Just before the 6 p.m. deadline, Chris Antonetti, president of baseball operations, called Kwan.
“It was like nine minutes before the deadline,” said Kwan. “My heart dropped when I saw it. I was expecting something, and I sure he knew the magnitude that entailed.
“But Chris said, ‘You can rest easy. We’re not going to make any moves with you. I just wanted you to know before the deadline ended because sometimes, they process trades after the deadline, too.
“He just wanted me not to be in the dark about that. That was really nice of him.”
The Guardians did trade Shane Bieber to Toronto and Paul Sewald to Detroit on Thursday. They also claimed right-hander Carlos Hernandez off waivers from Detroit and will add him to the 26-man roster sometime this weekend.
“It feels good to know where I’m going to stay for the rest of the year,” said Kwan. “No more outside distractions. I think we have enough to make a good run at the postseason.
“There’s a lot of baseball left to play. I think we’re hitting our stride offensively and we’re within striking distance.”
Kwan said he’d miss Bieber and Sewald.
“Shane has been a great mentor to me the last couple of years, especially with the trade deadline,” said Kwan. “Paul was a huge addition, and he kept the clubhouse light. So that was a bummer to see them go.”
