Jacob Misiorowski rallies Brewers past Cubs in Game 1 of series
Jacob Misiorowski pushed through a rough first inning but rallied the Brewers in an eventually win over the Cubs at American Family Field in Milwaukee on July 28, 2025.
The final two months of the regular season are underway as the Milwaukee Brewers take on the Washington Nationals for the first of a three-game series on Aug. 1.
Follow along for live updates from Nationals Park as Jose Quintana (7-4, 3.50) starts for Milwaukee against Nationals lefty Mitchell Parker (7-10, 4.91).
William Contreras is all the way locked in
This is the version of William Contreras the Brewers have been waiting to see — though he may even be blowing that out of the water with how scalding he’s been at the plate.
Contreras tied his career high with his fourth hit of the game in the seventh, a rocket off the bat to left for a two-run homer to give Milwaukee an 11-4 lead.
The ball left the bat at an exit velocity of 104.4 mph, making it the 10th out of the last 11 batted balls of 95+ mph, the threshold for Statcast to label a swing as “hard-hit.”
The results have been just as impressive. In four games this week, Contreras is 11 for 17 with three home runs and a double. He previously had just two extra-base hits, both doubles, over his last 12 games, part of an extended stretch of a frustrating lack of power for one of the Brewers’ top sluggers the last two years.
Two-homer game for Blake Perkins
All the complaints about the Brewers offense not adding enough slug at the trade deadline were answered by…Blake Perkins?
The Brewers’ generally modest-swinging, unassuming center fielder socked his second homer of the night to push the lead to 8-2 in the fifth inning, a line-drive into the visiting bullpen in left-center to give him his first career multi-homer game in the majors.
Both came against Nationals lefty Mitchell Parker, who exited the game following the second blast with a telephone number of a pitching line: 4 innings, 12 hits and 8 runs.
When newly-acquired outfielder Brandon Lockridge singled later in the inning, it gave every hitter in the starting lineup a hit, then Christian Yelich extended the lead to seven two batters later with a single to reach base for a third time already.
Brewers tee off against Mitchell Parker in third
The second time through the order against Parker, the Brewers turned the Nationals lefty into a batting practice hurler.
A five-run inning turned a 1-1 tie into a comfortable cushion for Milwaukee’s own southpaw, Jose Quintana.
It began with a scalding single off the bat of the suddenly-surging William Contreras, his ninth consecutive batted ball at 95+ mph. Two batters later, Andrew Vaughn delivered his 22nd RBI in his 17th game with the Brewers with a single up the middle.
After Caleb Durbin’s bunt single loaded the bases, Danny Jansen picked up his first RBI with the Brewers with a sac fly. Andruw Monasterio and Joey Ortiz exchanged two-out doubles, with the former hitting off the very top of the wall in left, to pad the lead further.
Blake Perkins homers in early exchange of runs
A CJ Abrams leadoff double and two-out Luis Garcia Jr. two-strike RBI single produced the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, but Blake Perkins promptly got it back.
The Brewers center fielder got a 1-2 mistake from Parker and sent it out to the first row of the left-field seats for his first home run of the season.
