CLEVELAND, Ohio — Stephen Vogt didn’t care that the Twins called up eight players from the minors on Friday so they could field a team against his Guardians on Friday night.

“They always play us tough,” said Vogt, regarding the Twins, who traded away 11 of their players earlier this week.

Vogt was right as the Twins extended the Guardians to 10 innings before Kyle Manzardo gave the Guardians a 3-2 victory with a bases-loaded single.

The Guardians, 8-5 in extra innings this year, started the 10th with Brayan Rocchio, the automatic runner, on second. Steven Kwan moved him to third on a bunt single before David Fry struck out and Jose Ramirez was intentionally walked.

Manzardo sent a solid single to left centerfield off Kody Funderburk. It was his second walk-off hit against the Twins this season.

Cade Smith worked two innings for the win.

The Guardians took an early 2-0 lead off Twins starter Joe Ryan. Gavin Williams made it stand up until Hunter Gaddis made a throwing error that allowed the Twins to tie the score at 2-2 in the seventh inning.

Gaddis relieved Erik Sabrowski with two out and runners on second and third. Austin Martin sent a squibber back to the mound. The 6-foot-6, 250-pound Gaddis fielded the ball and tried to make a jump throw, ala Hall of Famer Derek Jeter, to first. The ball skipped past Carlos Santana as both runs scored to tie the game.

Kwan, who received a loud ovation from the crowd for surviving Thursday’s trade deadline, started the game with a single. He took second on Daniel Schneemann’s grounder to second baseman Edouard Julien, who bobbled a potential double play ball, and had to settle for the out at first.

Jose Ramirez delivered Kwan for a 1-0 lead with a single to right field. Ramirez followed with a steal of second base to make him the 17th player in the big leagues to have at least 275 homers and steals in his career. He is the first primary third baseman (50% of his games played at third) to do it and the second switch-hitter.

The Guardians made it 2-0 in the second on Rocchio’s single to center that scored Santana from second. Santana reached on a one-out single and took second on Bo Naylor’s walk.

Rocchio sent a 1-1 pitch into center field for his 15th RBI in his last 21 games.

Williams protected the 2-0 lead with six scoreless innings. It was the eighth time in his last 13 starts that Williams has pitched at least six innings.

He struck out eight, walked two and allowed four hits on 96 pitches.

Not only did Kwan score the Guardians’ first run, but he took a run off the scoreboard for the Twins in the third when he threw out Brooks Lee at the plate.

Lee reached on a leadoff walk and took second on a groundout. Williams struck out Julien, but Austin Martin, the leadoff hitter, singled to left. Lee tried to score, but Kwan made a strong throw home and Naylor applied the tag. Plate umpire Adam Beck called Lee out, but the Twins challenged.

The call on the field, after a long wait, was confirmed as the Guardians retained their 2-0 lead.

Ryan, who entered the game with 2.58 ERA against Cleveland, retired 12 straight after Rocchio’s single. Manzardo ended the streak with a one-out single in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
