Brewers manager Pat Murphy on Bob Uecker, pitching before home opener

The Brewers prepare for their home opener of the 2025 season against the Royals.

During the AppleTV+ broadcast of the Aug. 1 battle between the Milwaukee Brewers and Washington Nationals, Brewers manager Pat Murphy joined sideline reporter Tricia Whitaker for a third-inning interview, and boy was it a doozie.

Whitaker told Murphy, “Rumor has it that during the game you like to partake in some snacks.”

It’s uncertain if anyone could have been prepared for what came next.

At first, Murphy played coy saying, “I’m like anyone else in the world; I don’t need to be singled out.” But then he produced a pancake from his back pocket.

Yes, a pocket pancake. Which he then shared with Whitaker.

“They’re wonderful; you want some?” Murphy asked, as a nation watched in shock when Whitaker did not say “absolutely not.”

“Pizza, bagels, what else do you keep in your pocket?” she asked as she finished her interview.

“Whatever fits,” Murphy deadpanned.

Murphy was in a good mood, no doubt, given that the Brewers had just taken a 6-1 lead with a five-run outburst in the third. The Brewers went on to win, 16-9.

During the postgame, Murphy confirmed it was typical for him to have delicacies on demand in the dugout.

“I add a little carbs during the game,” he said. “When I wear I hoodie during the game, that’s full of carbs.

“I usually get (pizza) out of the hotel; people leave the pizza boxes outside,” he continued, completely straight-faced. “They always leave some slices.”

Whitaker confessed in the eighth inning that the interview featured a little bit of set-up, and the Apple team had arranged for Murphy to be given a pancake, whipped up by the clubhouse chef at Nationals Park, in advance of the interview. But, Whitaker said, the comedic bit arose from Murphy’s own admission that he occasionally had servings of food like pancakes (or pizza, bagels or waffles) in his pockets during games.
