Fargo scored four runs in the top of the eleventh inning, then held off a rally in the bottom of the inning for a 6-4 win over Valley City in an elimination game at the the 2025 Class A State Legion Tournament.Â
Fargo struck first with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Finn Bergseth led off the inning with a single followed by a double by Eli Emineth. Tate Barnacle singled in Bergseth for the first run of the game. Andrew Perreault hit into a 4-6-3 double play. Emineth came in to score to make it 2-0 Jets.
Valley City got one run back in the bottom of the fifth. With two out, Corbyn Powell was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. Trevor Fetsch singled to right, that was the first hit of the game for the Royals. Jack Samuelson then singled to left, scoring Powell. Fetsch was caught in a run down between second and third and was tagged out to end the inning.
With the score 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Will Schwehr led off with a double into the right field corner. Adam Shanenko singled to right center, courtesy runner Brody Mueller stopped at third. Bryson Heck walked to load the bases for Corbyn Powell. Powell hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Mueller with the tying run. With two out, Jack Samuelson was intentionally walked to reload the bases. Parker Roelfsema hit a come backer to the mound. Pitcher Carter Gephart couldn’t get the ball out of his glove and had to race to the bag to beat Roelfsema. Despite a collision on the play, the out was recorded to end the inning.Â
The score stayed that way until then top of the eleventh inning. Cody Ebeling led off the eleventh with a walk. He would advance to second on a wild pitch. Bergseth walked. Then Ebeling moved to third on a failed bunt attempt by Emineth. Another wild pitch scored Ebeling and moved Bergseth to second.A wild pitch on ball four to Emineth moved Bergseth to third. Barnacle doubled to left center, scoring Bergseth to make it 4-2 and put runners at second and third an still no one out. Perreault flew out to shallow right field for the first out of the inning. Jack Joyce popped out to third for the second out. Evan Felber grounded up the middle. Shortstop Samuelson’s throw was low and short-hopped first baseman Andrew Sykora who could not snare the low throw. Emineth and Barnacle both scored to make it 6-2. Harper Schultz grounded out to third to end the inning.
In the bottom of the eleventh, Sykora was hit by a pitch to open the half inning. James Schwehr struck out swinging for the first out of the inning. Will Schwehr then connected on a pitch and homered over the right field fence to cut the Jets lead in half to 6-4. Shanenko struck out for the second out. Heck lined a single to center bringing the tying run to the plate in Corbyn Powell. Powell then singled to left to put the tying run on first and two out. Fetsch hit a fly ball to right center field that was caught by Joyce to end the game.
Will Schwehr, in his last game as a Royal, was 2 for 5 with two runs scored, a double, a home run and two RBI. Corbyn Powell was 1 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI. Jack Samuelson was 1 for 2Â with an RBI. Adam Shanenko and Bryson Heck were both 1 for 4. Trevor Fetsch was 1 for 6 and Andrew Sykora scored a run.Â
Bryson Heck got a no decision but pitched great. He allowed six hits and two earned runs in 9 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out four. At one point, he retired 13 straight Jets batters. Powell took the loss. He allowed one hit and four runs, two earned in 2/3 of an inning. He walked three and did not strike out a batter. Will Schwehr retired three of the four batters he faced to end the game.
The Royals season ends with a 22-5 record. All but one of the 15 players on the state tournament roster will be eligible to come back in 2026.Â
