BOSTON — Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer will receive an anti-inflammation injection Saturday for his sprained right wrist in an attempt “to get him back,” manager Alex Cora said.

The Red Sox placed the 22-year-old on the injured list July 25 after he left Boston’s June 23 game with wrist discomfort.

“He really wants to get back and this is the route,” Cora said before Saturday’s game against the Astros at Fenway Park. “We’ll see how he reacts to it, then we’ll go from there.”

Cora said this is the “quickest” route to a return if it works.

“We have to wait three days to see if it works,” Cora said. “And then he starts doing baseball activities and see how he reacts to it.”

Mayer has gone 29-for-127 (.228) with a .272 on-base percentage, .402 slugging percentage, four home runs, eight doubles, one triple, 10 RBIs, 20 runs, eight walks and 41 strikeouts in 44 games.

He was 8-for-27 (.296) in nine games before landing on the IL.

The left-handed hitter has started 28 games at third base and seven games at second base.

Slaten throws a bullpen

Red Sox setup man Justin Slaten — who has been on the IL since June 1 with right shoulder inflammation — threw his first bullpen session Saturday.
