Major League Baseball’s transaction wire heated up on Wednesday night and included a former Alabama standout changing organizations.

With the 2025 MLB trade deadline looming at 5 p.m. CDT Thursday, the deals between contending buyers and disappointed sellers gained momentum.

Among the trades from Wednesday night, former Alabama infielder Jim Jarvis went from the Detroit Tigers to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for pitcher Rafael Montero.

Jarvis played shortstop at Alabama from 2020 through 2023, when the Tigers made him an 11th-round draft pick. As a senior, Jarvis received the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Gold Glove Award as the nation’s best fielding shortstop.

In his second minor-league season, Jarvis has hit .242 in 77 games for the Erie SeaWolves of the Double-A Eastern League.

Atlanta’s Double-A affiliate is the Columbus Clingstones of the Southern League.

The Braves obtained Montero from Houston on April 8 after he had pitched in three games for the Astros to start his 11th MLB season.

In 36 relief appearances for Atlanta in 2025, the right-hander has an 0-1 record and a 5.50 earned-run average. In 34.1 innings, Montero has yielded 27 hits and 21 walks and struck out 34.

In his career, Montero has pitched in 360 MLB regular-season games with a 22-29 record, 30 saves and 4.76 ERA. Montero’s best season came in 2022, when he made 71 relief appearances in the regular season with a 2.37 ERA and 14 saves, then pitched 10 times in the postseason as the Houston Astros won the World Series.

At 64-46, the Tigers are tied with the Toronto Blue Jays for the best record in the American League. At 45-62, the Braves are 16 games behind the New York Mets in the NL East and 14 games out of the National League’s final wild-card spot.
