Los Angeles Dodgers utility man Tommy Edman left Sunday’s series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays in the fifth inning with an ankle injury.

Edman appears to have re-aggravated the same ankle that required a stint on the injured list earlier this season. He exited the game after rounding first base.

Miguel Rojas replaced Edman as the Dodgers’ second baseman. Edman was 1-for-2 at the plate before making his untimely exit.
This season, the 30-year-old is hitting .226 with 12 home runs, 44 runs batted in, and an OPS of .675. At the end of July, the Dodgers were already contemplating placing Edman on the IL.
Both Edman and infielder Hyeseong Kim were dealing with injuries, but the Dodgers ultimately chose to place Kim on the IL with a shoulder injury.
“That’s the thing that, it is a blurred line,” Roberts in July. “The players obviously feel that they’re not hurt, where they can play and post, which is great. But the line of, are you still hurting the team, hurting yourself, that’s the thing that the organization, the training staff, we’ve got to make that decision.”
Edman’s ongoing ankle injury has plagued him for much of the season, beginning in May.
“It’s something that’s kind of always there,” Edman said about his injury.
After Sunday’s exit, it appears Edman could also land on the IL. Manager Dave Roberts will likely provide an update on Edman following the rubber match at Steinbrenner Field.
The Dodgers are extremely short-handed with Max Muncy, Kiké Hernandez, and Kim all sidelined. The worst case scenario would be if Edman had to join the trio on the IL, leaving LA short another position player.
