The Gillette Roughriders are back on top of AA Wyoming American Legion Baseball. The Riders captured their third state title last Friday at Powers Field in Cheyenne. Gillette survived the Casper Oilers in an elimination game that went eight innings, 2-1. They turned around and faced rival Sheridan for the championship. The Riders prevailed 4-3. It was the program’s first AA state crown since 2014, and its first won outside of the city of Gillette.
The final day of the 2025 state tournament had three teams left with one loss. Gillette squared off against Casper in an elimination game. The winner moved on to the state championship against Sheridan.
In the first game, Casper took an early 1-0 lead on a Holden Christensen RBI single in the first inning. Gillette fought back and tied it on Riley Hawk’s RBI single in the sixth. Both teams threatened in the seventh inning, but neither team scored, so the game went to extra innings at 1-1. Casper had two on and no one out in the eighth, but a double play and a groundout ended the inning. Gillette started the eighth with a walk. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second, and a passed ball moved the runner to third. Caisen Schilling hit a ground ball to the shortstop, but the throw went wide of first, and Schilling beat the fielder to the base, in a controversial call, which scored the run, and the Riders won, 2-1.
In the championship, Gillette scored one run in both the second and third innings on Sheridan errors. Another error by the Troopers in the fifth inning led to two runs and a 4-1 lead. In the top of the seventh, Sheridan drew two bases-loaded walks, and that cut the lead to 4-3, but a ground ball to Gillette shortstop Seth Petersen turned into a fielder’s choice, as he stepped on second base for the force out, and the celebration was on for the Riders.
