The Colorado Rockies’ manager search is underway after firing Bud Black.

Black departs as the franchise leader in games managed (1,234) and wins (544) over nine seasons with the club. He led the Rockies to consecutive playoffs appearances (2017-18). But he failed to reach the postseason since and posted a .441 career winning percentage as manager in Colorado.

Here are 10 names to consider in replacing Black as the Rockies’ search begins.

Warren Schaeffer

The interim manager gets 120-plus games to make his case for the full-time job. Schaeffer, 40, is a former Rockies minor leaguer who later managed their Triple-A affiliate (Isotopes). Schaeffer excelled in the last three seasons as Colorado’s third base and infield coach.

Clint Hurdle

Can Hurdle recapture the magic of 2007? He managed the Rockies when they last reached the World Series. Now, he’s been promoted to bench coach after Mike Redmond was also let go. Hurdle would be a re-tread with 17 total seasons of MLB managerial experience between Colorado and Pittsburgh.

Walt Weiss

Weiss played 14 MLB seasons — including four with the Rockies (1994-97) — before a separate four-year stint as Colorado’s manager (2013-16). Weiss is currently the Braves bench coach. A Rockies reunion is possible. But it likely wouldn’t excite an already apathetic fan base.

Joe Girardi

Girardi won the World Series as Yankees manager in 2009 and touts a career managerial winning percentage of .545 over three teams. He’s currently a TV baseball analyst in New York. But Girardi spent three of his 15 MLB playing seasons with the Rockies (1993-95). This would be a big-name hire.

Want to get people talking? Ottavino is on the tail end of a 15-year MLB pitching career after being waived last month by the Yankees. He spent seven seasons (2012-18) pitching in Colorado. Ottavino has been quoted in multiple reports about his desire to become a manager. Is now the time?

Joe Maddon

Maddon is another World Series champion who might want another shot at managing. He’s been out of the game since 2022. But Maddon experienced small-market success in Tampa Bay and won a ring with Kris Bryant in Chicago. Maddon would likely be a fan-favorite hire.

Don Mattingly

The ex-Yankees slugger is currently the Blue Jays bench coach. But Mattingly has 12 years of managerial experience, including 2020 NL Manager of the Year honors with the Marlins. Mattingly is also plenty familiar with the NL West after five seasons (2011-15) managing the Dodgers.

Rodney Linares

Linares worked his way up the Astros organization before landing the bench coach job with the Rays. Both organizations found success with player development. Linares managed the Dominican team at the World Baseball Classic. It seems a matter of time before he’s an MLB manager.

Kai Correa

Correa is the former Giants bench coach who became interim manager in 2023 after San Francisco fired Gabe Kapler. Correa has since moved into a coaching role with the Guardians as the director of defense, strategy and baserunning. He is considered a top MLB manager prospect.

Alyssa Nakken

The Rockies can make the biggest splash possible by naming the first woman MLB manager. Nakken rose to prominence as a Giants assistant coach and became the first woman to coach on the field in a Major League game. Nakken currently works in player development with the Guardians.
