Following a substandard series loss to the Chicago White Sox over the weekend, the Los Angeles Angels turn the page to their final series of a lengthy homestand, hosting the Tampa Bay Rays for a three-game set.
The series will kick off Monday, August 4th, as the Rays kick off a west coast road trip.
Below, you can find the team previews, including where to watch, game details, injury reports and odds.
Angels: Los Angeles (54-58) narrowly avoided a series sweep against the White Sox on Sunday, mounting a five-run comeback capped off by a Taylor Ward three-run home run to walk it off. Ward described the win as something the team “definitely needed.”
The Angels dropped their first two games to Chicago without a contest. On Saturday they mustered just one hit, having gone scoreless for 16 straight innings up until a noisy 6th inning that sparked a comeback Sunday.
Mike Trout returned to the lineup after being down two games with an illness. Rookie Christian Moore also rejoined the team after sitting out a month with a left thumb sprain. The offense had looked bleak prior to their returns when they found life Sunday
Moore, the league’s No. 46 ranked prospect, had gone 5-for-11 in four rehab appearances. He went 1-for-3 with a walk in his return Sunday.
Despite the disappointing series outcome, the Angels were able to garner length from their starts as both Anderson and Kochanowicz pitched six innings in their respective starts. Hendricks pitched five innings in Saturday’s loss, as the Angels bullpen is charged up against a pesky Rays lineup.
Rays: Tampa Bay (55-58) is fresh off a series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers where they were shut out two separate times in one weekend.
The Rays are in the midst of one of their worst stretches in a while, going 7-18 in the month of July. Per FanGraphs, they held a 81.4% chance to make the playoffs on June 28th. As of August 4th, their odds sit at 7.9%.
They have played very worrisome baseball on the road in part of that stretch. The Rays are 3-17 in their last 20 road games.
In hopes to turn those odds back around, the Rays are tabbing newly acquired Adrian Houser to start Monday for his Rays debut. Houser had been slated to face the Angels this past Friday as a member of the White Sox before being traded.
