Mason Fink hit two home runs and drove in four runs to power Verona to a 10-1 win over Dodgeville on Sunday, July 20, in Dodgeville.
With the win, Verona (10-1) clinched the top seed in the Western Section Home Talent League playoffs. Verona will host Wiota in a first-round playoff game on Sunday, July 27, at Stampfl Field.
Verona’s David Lund went 4-for-4 and scored three runs. Verona’s Ryan Ambrosy delivered an RBI single in the top of the second inning to give the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead.
The Cavaliers broke the game open with a four-run fourth. Fink belted a solo home run to left. James Rae came through with an RBI double. Tristan Largent delivered a two-run double to give the Cavaliers a 6-1 lead.
Verona added four runs in the sixth. Owen Davis had an RBI single. Fink blasted a three-run home run to left. Fink went 2-for-3. Davis finished 2-for-5 at the plate with one RBI.
Aidan Williams pitched five innings to earn the win, giving up one earned run on one hit with five strikeouts. Sam Pederson tossed four no-hit innings in relief and struck out nine.
Verona 9, Cross Plains 4
Nate Novinska went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Cavaliers by Cross Plains on Thursday, July 17, to remain unbeaten in HTL Night League play.
Brady Patten went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Ambrosy knocked in three runs and Keith Prindle went 2-for-5 at the plate. With the win, Verna improved to 9-0 in the HTL Night League.
The Cavaliers broke the game open with a five-run top of the third. Ambrosy had a big three-run double.
The Cavaliers used a trio of pitchers. Owen Davis gave up three earned runs on seven hits in four innings to earn the win. He struck out six and walked two. Dylan Hesch tossed two shutout innings in relief and struck out four. Rae pitched one inning and struck out two.
