The Los Angeles Dodgers traded right-handed pitcher Dustin May to the Boston Red Sox ahead of the trade deadline in a move that became increasingly more likely heading into the final week of July.

With the Dodgers getting healthy, May — who had a 4.85 ERA across a career-high 104 innings this season — was losing his spot in the rotation.

So just before the 3 p.m. PT deadline on Thursday, the Dodgers sent May to Boston for a pretty substantial haul: 2024 first-round pick James Tibbs III and outfielding prospect Zach Ehrhard.

While the trade didn’t exactly come out of the blue, it was still weird to see May on the move. The 27-year-old had spent his entire professional career with the Dodgers since being drafted by Los Angeles in the third round of the 2016 draft.

On Monday, May posted a message Instagram following the trade.

“As one chapter closes another begins the road wasn’t always easy, but every moment was well worth it,” May wrote. “I’m thankful for the years the lessons and the people who stuck with me through it all. It’s hard to put into words what this organization has meant to me and my family, forever grateful to be a Dodger. Excited for the next one! Boston, let’s get it!”

May was with the Dodgers for both World Series runs in 2020 and 2024 (although he didn’t pitch last season). He finished fifth in Rookie of the Year voting in 2020 and logged 10.2 innings across the 2020 postseason.

May will now get an opportunity to contribute to another postseason run, this time with the Red Sox where he’ll be in the starting rotation.

The Dodgers and Red Sox already faced off this year, so if they were to meet again, it would have to be in the World Series.
