The Sunnyside Barons 13U baseball team wrapped up their summer season with a split record during their final four games, finishing 2-2 with wins over Grandview and the White Sox, but losses to the Brewers and Marlins. The team closed out the season with an overall record of 6-8-1.
The Barons kicked off their final four games with a 16-8 win over Grandview on Tuesday, July 22.
Sunnyside jumped ahead early with a run in the first inning off a groundout by Jay S. The Barons followed up with a seven-run second inning, with RBI singles from Noah T., Andrew P., and Luis J. Landen P. also drew a walk that brought in a run.
Grandview mounted a brief rally in the fourth, scoring six runs, but the Barons’ early lead held firm.
Landen P. started on the mound for Sunnyside and pitched three hitless innings, striking out three and walking one. Offensively, Alvaro J. went 3-for-4 to lead the Barons in hits. Jay S. and Noah T. each collected three RBIs, and the team racked up 17 stolen bases.
On Thursday, July 24, the Barons dominated the White Sox in a 10-0 shutout.
Sunnyside jumped out to a quick lead in the first, scoring three runs on a groundout by Luis J. and a defensive error.
The Barons exploded for five more runs in the second, with key hits from Jay S. and Alvaro J. Andrew P. earned the win, pitching three hitless innings with six strikeouts despite walking six. Landen P. closed out the game with two innings of relief, striking out three.
Jay, Alvaro, and Andrew each had two hits. The Barons stole 11 bases in the game.
The Barons’ win streak was snapped Monday, July 28, in a 10-5 loss to the Brewers.
The Brewers took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and added two more in the second. Sunnyside struggled to catch up despite two hits from Andrew P. and RBIs from Jay S. and Jayson C.
Jay S. started on the mound for Sunnyside, allowing six hits and seven runs — three earned — across four innings. He struck out five and walked seven. The Barons tallied six walks and stole nine bases in the game.
Sunnyside ended their season with a 6-2 loss to the Marlins on Wednesday, July 30.
The Marlins jumped out early with three runs in the first inning and added to their lead in the third and fourth. Andrew P. started for the Barons and turned in a strong performance despite the loss, striking out 15 and walking two over six innings. He allowed six runs, only two of which were earned.
Andrew also led the offense with two hits and three stolen bases.
