Welcome to our first official story on our newly-revamped site! We made it! Thanks for your patience today.
The Chicago White Sox (42-70) have remained on the West Coast, just traveling a bit north from Los Angeles all the way up to Washington for a three-game set against the Seattle Mariners (60-53). In what feels like a complete miracle, the South Siders already have reached 42 wins — beating last year’s win total by about two months. Progress!
Prior to tonight’s game, the White Sox announced a few roster moves, including Tim Elko being activated from the IL … but remaining in Charlotte [sad trombone], and lefthander Bryan Hudson getting the call-up to the big leagues after being picked up on waivers Sunday.
Davis Martin is making his third start since his return on July 22, and 16th start of the season, and he is 1-1 in his two July starts with five earned runs given up across 10 2/3 innings. He’s also struggling with his control a bit, and has walked seven batters compared to 10 strikeouts, and Martin’s 1.500 WHIP also highlights this. He has struck out 63 batters this season at a 16.6% strikeout rate, so while he doesn’t whiff opponents at a super-high rate, he has been making it work.
Davis could have some help in the strikeout department, as the Mariners have struck out the fourth most of all MLB teams (1,005) with a 23.1% strikeout rate (seventh in MLB) — however they also are fourth in home runs, with two players in the Top 5. The M’s offense hasn’t been playing their best baseball since the All-Star break, and rank last in batting average (.205) since July 18.
They do have some sluggers that can help them out though. Cal Raleigh has been an X-factor for Seattle with unmatched power this season, ranking third in all of baseball in slugging (.597). To put things in perspective, he has hit the same amount of home runs as games the White Sox have won (42) – woof — and three times as many as any single White Sox player has. Where have you gone, Paul DeJong?
Seattle also has recently acquired Eugenio Suárez from the D-backs, and though he hasn’t made a huge impact yet with the Mariners he’s most likely due for a breakout game as he’s ranked fourth in RBIs in MLB with 87, just one behind Raleigh. Hopefully Martin can keep it out of the sweet spot, but he might face some challenges with a tough Seattle lineup.
I can’t lie, I’m digging how the Mariners announced tonight’s lineup:
On the other side of the ball, the White Sox will face righthander Bryan Woo, who is making his 22nd start of the season. Woo has posted a 3.11 ERA across 133 innings, and has been excellent from a WHIP perspective, sitting at 0.970 thus far, which ranks seventh in MLB. He’s quite efficient in terms of strikeouts, with 127 on the year at a 24.2% strikeout rate, and doesn’t walk too many batters, sitting at just a 4.8% walk rate.
Woo will have to deal with the hot-hitting rookie in Colson Montgomery, who has been raking since the All-Star break. He is tied for second in MLB for both home runs (seven) and RBIs (21), and is slugging .655 with a .914 OPS in his 58 at-bats. Even MLB Network had to shout him out with how well he’s been hitting the ball after struggling so much in the minors this year.
Lenyn Sosa and Luis Robert Jr. have also been bolstering the team offensively, with Luis paving the way slashing .395/.460/.535 with two home runs and seven stolen bases, and Lenyn has driven in the most RBIs (12) with two long balls himself.
Here’s how the White Sox will line ’em up in Seattle tonight:
It’s gonna be a late one, folks! But thankfully it will also be a beautiful night for some baseball in Seattle. Weather should be about 75°, and first pitch will take place at 8:40 p.m. CT, and the game can be viewed on CHSN or listened to on the radio at ESPN Chicago AM 1000. Let’s get a bounce-back W!
