The Milwaukee Brewers will go for their fifth straight win on their current road trip (and sixth straight road victory overall) tonight when they take on the Braves in Atlanta in the second of a three-game series.
The Brewers won a squeaker last night, a 3-1 game in which their offense was limited to three hits but made them count, as Isaac Collins’ three-run home run was all that they’d need behind another strong performance from Quinn Priester. Tonight, the Brewers will send their staff leader, Freddy Peralta, to the mound to take on Atlanta’s Joey Wentz.
Wentz, a former first-round pick, is 27 and on his third team this season. He made 19 relief appearances for Pittsburgh and six more with the Twins but was waived by Minnesota after allowing 17 hits and 14 runs (all earned) in just eight innings–four of those runs coming in an inning and a third in the Twins’ 17-6 loss to the Brewers on June 20th. The Braves have opted to try Wentz as a starter; he pitched mostly as a starter in his first full season in 2023, but struggled badly with Detroit in that role. He hasn’t pitched as a starter regularly since then, in the majors or the minors, but the Braves desperately need starting pitchers and they’re giving it a shot. Wentz has been okay in three starts with Atlanta–he got beat up a bit by Texas on July 25th, but that was sandwiched between two solid outings: four innings of shutout ball on July 19th against the Yankees and 6 ?
? excellent shutout innings (one hit, three walks, seven strikeouts) on July 30th (in a game Atlanta lost 1-0 in extra innings).
Peralta is coming off of a rough outing against the Cubs last Wednesday. He completed only four innings and allowed five earned runs on five hits and four walks, needing 85 pitches to make it that far. It was arguably Peralta’s worst start of the year, but it luckily came in game three of a series which the Brewers had won the first two of. Peralta’s overall numbers are still solid: he sports a 3.08 ERA (131 ERA+) and leads the majors with 12 wins, if that’s a stat that matters to you. A good bounceback outing would be nice tonight.
A couple of roster notes today: first, Shelby Miller has been sent to Nashville for a rehab outing, which he’ll make today. A note from Adam McCalvy suggests that it could be Miller’s only rehab outing, and we could see him in the Milwaukee bullpen very soon.
The other injury note is regarding Jackson Chourio, who we got a positive update about today. It sounds like things are progressing well and he should be back before the end of August (and conceivably as early as a couple of weeks from now). With Jacob Misiorowski also due back around that time (and possibly an added bonus in Rhys Hoskins), the Brewers could, knock on wood, get close to full strength right as the calendar turns to September.
Speaking of injured Brewers, we also got an update that Sal Frelick, who is not in tonight’s starting lineup, is getting daily treatment and is available for games, they’re just being careful with him. But with Frelick out, Pat Murphy continues to tinker with the top of the lineup: tonight it’ll be Caleb Durbin in that leadoff role, after we saw Brice Turang there the last two games and Brandon Lockridge before that. Lockridge has tonight’s game off, as the Brewers will send Christian Yelich, Blake Perkins, and Isaac Collins into the outfield with William Contreras as the designated hitter and Danny Jansen as the catcher.
First pitch tonight is at 6:15 p.m. on FanDuel Sports Network Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network.
