MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Houston High School graduate Ryan Mitchell may not have played his last inning in Shelby County.
The St. Louis Cardinals drafted the former Houston High School outfielder/shortstop with the 55th overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft.
Mitchell, the Gatorade Player of the Year for the State of Tennessee in 2025, represented the Cardinals’ second pick of the draft, coming 50 picks after St. Louis took University of Tennessee LHP Liam Doyle.
Major League Baseball lists Mitchell 55 among its 2025 prospect rankings. MLB’s scouting report for Mitchell reads, in part, “Mitchell has a quick left-handed stroke, rarely chases pitches out of the strike zone and makes consistent contact. He has advanced feel for the barrel and a willingness to use the entire field. His hitting ability, bat speed and projectable strength should enable him to grow into average power once he’s fully developed.”
Mitchell has committed to Georgia Tech but could forego that commitment and immediately join the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization. If he does, his road to the majors could take him back to Memphis for a homecoming of sorts with the Memphis Redbirds, the Cardinals’ AAA affiliate.
