Corbin Carroll’s solo home run in the first inning and an Alek Thomas sacrifice fly in the second have the Diamondbacks ahead 2-0 through five innings against the San Diego Padres at Chase Field on Wednesday, Aug. 6.
Starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani reached his pitch limit, apparently no more than 70 pitches, with 4 1/3 innings of scoreless ball for the Diamondbacks. DeSclafani allowed three hits and struck out four.
Jalen Beeks relieved DeSclafani and got two important outs with two runners on base.
Center fielder Jorge Barrosa made a running catch in the top of the fifth to take a possible hit away from San Diego’s Xander Bogaerts, and heard from some fans in the right field seats who chanted his name.
But the key defensive play through five innings was when the Padres attempted a double steal in the top of the fifth.
Jake Cronenworth, running from third base while José Iglesias ran from first to second, was cut down at the plate.
On the play, Diamondbacks catcher James McCann threw to Geraldo Perdomo at second base. Perdomo stepped forward to field the throw and immediately threw back to home plate. McCann caught the ball and tagged out Cronenworth to end the inning.

Ginkel to 60-day injured list, Kelly called up from Reno
The Diamondbacks made a roster move on Wednesday, Aug. 6, calling up RHP Casey Kelly from Triple-A Reno after optioning LHP Kyle Nelson to Reno following the team’s 10-5 loss to the Padres on Aug. 6.
Additionally, relief pitcher Kevin Ginkel was transferred to the 60-day disabled list with what is for now being called a sprained right shoulder. Ginkel’s season appears over unless the Diamondbacks get into the postseason. His diagnosis is pending a second opinion.
“He’s probably going to be down for the remainder of the year,” Lovullo said of Ginkel. “Does it mean that it’s more serious than we thought? No. I think it was going to require some time down no matter what. I feel strongly it’s going to be a very conservative approach to his recovery. It’s not going to require surgery.”
Kelly was with the Diamondbacks in minor league spring training this year and went 2-5 with a 5.82 earned run average at Reno this season, in 18 appearances. He spent six seasons pitching professionally in Korea from 2019 to 2024.
Catcher Gabriel Moreno (right-hand fracture) is moving closer to a return from the 60-day disabled list. He is throwing from 90 feet and continuing his soft toss and batting cage work, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said, and was to catch RHP Zac Gallen’s bullpen session before Wednesday’s game.
First baseman Pavin Smith and infielder Ildemaro Vargas (10-day IL) are scheduled to play four innings on Thursday, Aug. 8 at Salt River Fields, Smith at first base and Vargas as the DH.

Perdomo named team award recipient
Diamondbacks SS Geraldo Perdomo is the club’s Heart & Hustle Award winner, as announced by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association.
The award, according to the MLBPAA, is given to active players who exemplify a true passion for the game and who best embody the values, spirit and traditions of baseball.
“He plays the game the right way, he’s present every single day, he takes coaching as good as anybody I’ve been around,” Lovullo said of Perdomo. “He deals with failure, he understands why it happens, edits his day and goes out the next day to try to be the best version of himself.”
At the end of the season, all former players and fans will vote to select the overall winner from each of the 30 MLB club recipients, and the award will be announced in mid-November.
