Charlotte Knights 6, Syracuse Mets 0 (5 innings) (Statcast box)
The Knights (52-57) only played five innings before the rain interfered, but they made those innings count against Syracuse (58-52).
Vinny Capra led off the game with a single, and Will Robertson followed with a walk. That brought Tim Elko to the plate, and Elko took full advantage of a 1-0 slider that caught too much of the zone. Elko blasted his 19th homer of the year with Charlotte and his 23rd overall if we include his time with the White Sox. Just like that, after three batters, the Knights had a 3-0 lead.
In the second, Blake Sabol led off with a single, and he advanced to second on a productive fly out by Dru Baker. That set the stage for Caden Connor, who lined a single to left to extend Charlotte’s lead to four.

The Knights added some insurance in the fourth, when Dru Baker went deep. The final run scored on a double in the fifth by Bryan Ramos. That double drove in Andre Lipcius, who had singled earlier in the inning.

Meanwhile, starter Bryse Wilson, 27, was terrific for the Knights. In fact, he pitched a complete game shutout, as Wilson did not allow any runs in five innings, and the game was called due to rain after five.

Tim Elko: 1-for-3, HR, 3 RBI

Bryse Wilson: 5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 4 K, fielding error

Bryan Ramos: 1-for-3, 2B, RBI

Vinny Capra: 1-for-2, BB, K

Caden Connor: 1-for-2, RBI

Andre Lipcius: 1-for-2, BB
Birmingham Barons 4, Chattanooga Lookouts 2
The Barons (64-40) continued their winning ways with another victory over Chattanooga (53-46).

Starting pitcher Hagen Smith, 21, had a decent outing. Smith only allowed two runs in five innings, and he totaled six strikeouts. The downside to Smith’s performance was that he issued five walks. The control issue was problematic in the second, when Smith issued three walks before allowing a single that drove in the game’s first run. The Lookouts scored their second and final run in the third, when Edwin Arroyo tripled, and Ruben Ibarra singled.

Birmingham’s bullpen was outstanding, allowing zero runs on one hit in four innings. As a result, the offense only needed a few runs, and the hitters took care of business.

The Barons got on the board in the second, when Braden Montgomery led off with a single. With one out, Calvin Harris added a single to put runners on the corners. From there, Mario Camilletti popped out in foul territory, and wise, aggressive base running by Montgomery allowed the Barons to tie the game at one.

In the third, Ryan Galanie blasted a solo homer to tie the game at two. That homer was Galanie’s seventh with the Barons and his 11th overall this season.

With the score still 2-2 in the fifth, the Barons took the lead for good. Rikuu Nishida drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a ground out by William Bergolla. Sam Antonacci sliced a triple to drive in what turned out to be the winning run. Galanie drove in an insurance run with a ground out, and the Barons held their lead.

Mario Camilletti: 0-for-4, RBI

Hagen Smith: 5 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 5 BB, 6 K

Braden Montgomery: 2-for-4, RBI, outfield assist

Ryan Galanie: 1-for-4, HR

Sam Antonacci: 2-for-4, 2B, RBI

Wilfred Veras: 1-for-4, 1-for-1 stolen bases

Rikuu Nishida: 0-for-3, BB, K

William Bergolla: 0-for-3, BB
Winston-Salem Dash 5, Bowling Green Hot Rods 4
The Dash (40-62) pulled off a thrilling comeback to defeat the Hot Rods (55-47) in Bowling Green.

In the top of the first, the Dash put themselves on the board. Jacob Burke led off the game with a single, and he proceeded to score on a productive ground out by Jeral Perez.

The score remained 1-0 for several frames. Dash starter Lucas Gordon kept the Hot Rods off the board during his 3 1/3 innings, although it was a bumpy ride. Gordon issued five walks and needed 69 pitches to make it through those 3 1/3 frames (20.7 pitches per inning).

With the score still 1-0, the Hot Rods went to work against reliever Nick Altermatt in the fifth. Altermatt did allow four hits, but his defense was less than helpful. The first two Hot Rods of the inning reached on errors, and with one out, Bowling Green collected four consecutive singles. By the end of the hit parade, Bowling Green had a 4-1 lead.

Bowling Green held that 4-1 lead until the top of the ninth, when the Dash offense pulled off a big surprise. Burke led off the inning and was hit by a pitch, and Samuel Zavala picked up his second single of the game. Perez continued the rally with an RBI single to make the score was 4-2. After a balk, both base runners move up 90 feet, so the potential tying run was suddenly in scoring position.

Alec Makarewicz hit a clutch single to right to pull the Dash within one, and there were still no outs. Finally, the Hot Rods retired Drake Logan on a ground out, but that grounder drove in the tying run. From there, Jackson Appel lined a double to left that drove in the go-ahead run. The Dash protected that 5-4 lead, as reliever Phil Fox retired all three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth.

Jackson Appel: 1-for-3, 2B, BB, RBI

Nick Altermatt: 1 IP, 4 R (0 ER), 4 H, 0 BB, 1 K

Jeral Perez: 1-for-4, 2 RBI

Alec Makarewicz: 1-for-4, RBI

Jacob Burke: 1-for-3, HBP, 2 outfield assists

Lucas Gordon: 3 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 5 BB, 4 K

Seth Keener: 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 K
