Detroit Tigers’ Scott Harris doesn’t believe in Tarik Skubal window

Detroit Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris talks July 31, 2025, about how Tarik Skubal’s status impacts front office plans.

The Detroit Tigers aren’t looking so hot right now, but they have their ace on the mound to start the next series.

After dropping two of three games to the Minnesota Twins, the Tigers begin a three-game home series against the Los Angeles Angels from Friday-Sunday. The first game of the series will feature American League Cy Young favorite Tarik Skubal as he looks to propel the Tigers to a series win.

Skubal leads all pitchers in fWAR (5.7) and is second in MLB in strikeouts (182) and ERA (2.18) entering Thursday’s slate of games. He pitched another quality start in his last outing, a seven-inning, 10-strikeout performance in the Tigers’ 7-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, Aug. 2.

His performance, however, has been one of the few bright spots for the Tigers over the past week.

The team is 2-4 in August and has seen its lead in the AL Central fall to six games for the first time since June 5. Deadline additions like Chris Paddack and Rafael Montero have done little to reverse the team’s fortunes, though Charlie Morton pitched effectively in his Tigers’ debut (a 2-0 loss to the Phillies on Sunday, Aug. 1).

The Tigers’ six-game lead over the second-place Cleveland Guardians is still the largest division lead in baseball, and now they face an Angels team that is five games under .500 and currently in fourth place in the AL West.
