ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The Atlanta Braves host the Miami Marlins on Friday, marking the 11th of 15 regular season games broadcast on Gray Media in 2025.
It’s gotten to the point where the Atlanta Braves (47-66) are starting to look ahead to 2026.
Third baseman Austin Riley was activated from the injured list not too long before he went back on it after straining his abdomen during a diving play in Sunday’s win over the Cincinnati Reds in Bristol, Tennessee.
There’s no timetable on Riley’s return.
To add fuel to the fire, right-hander Grant Holmes recently hit the injured list with right elbow inflammation. With that, all five members of the team’s Opening Day rotation — Holmes, Chris Sale (rib), Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder), Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow) and AJ Smith-Shawver — are on the 60-day injured list at once.
Manager Brian Snitker said Monday that Holmes opted for a nonsurgical rehabilitation instead of Tommy John surgery, and if the nonsurgical process fails, Holmes will undergo surgery in the offseason. A procedure would ensure that the 29-year-old miss most of the 2026 campaign.
Southpaw Chris Sale threw live batting practice Thursday at Truist Park, facing two batters while throwing 30 total pitches. The 36-year-old was placed on the 60-day injured list retroactive to June 19 with rib fractures. According to Snitker, it’s likely Sale will make at least one minor-league rehab start before returning to Atlanta’s rotation.
“This is Major League Baseball, this is the big leagues,” Sale said on Thursday. “I’ve been taught to get outs anyway you possibly can. It kind of sucks for what happened and how long it had to take.”
