Jack Costello hit a three-run homer and Braedon Karpathios hit a pair of doubles in the TinCaps’ 8-3 win over the South Bend Cubs on Thursday.
Karpathios went a 3 for 3 as the TinCaps’ (50-54, 19-20 second half) registered eight hits and drew eight walks in their first win of the series.
Ryan Jackson hit a lead-off single in the first and scored on a fielding error. In the third, Costello’s sixth home run of the season extended the lead to 4-0. Kai Roberts launched a home run in the fourth to make it 5-0.
The Cubs rebounded with three runs in the next three innings, including a two-run home run by Brian Kalmer. The TinCaps added a run in the seventh on an attempted steal by Costello that resulted in a throwing error by Cubs catcher Ariel Armas, making it 6-3.
Karpathios hit his second double of the game in the eighth to score a pair of runs and make it 8-3. His two RBIs move him to ninth-most in the Midwest League at 53.
TinCaps right-hander Harry Gustin was credited with the win, striking out three batters without allowing a baserunner in two innings. Cubs right-hander Kevin Valdez gave up five runs in 3 1/3 innings in a losing effort.
The TinCaps start right-hander Isaiah Lowe (3-9, 5.54 ERA) against Cubs right-hander Brooks Caple (3-6, 6.46 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. today.
