While the pitching mostly left something to be desired for Atlanta’s minor league affiliates on Wednesday, the offense was aplenty while Cam Caminiti flashed his brilliance on the mount once again as Augusta pulled off their most dominant win of the season thus far.
(45-64) Gwinnett Stripers 0, (47-58) Columbus Clippers 6

Cal Conley, 2B: 1-3, 2BJarred Kelenic, CF: 2-4Davis Daniel, SP: 5 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 8 K

It was a rough day across the board for Gwinnett as the Stripers ultimately fell by a 6-0 final to Columbus.

Davis Daniel got the start in this one and while he managed to toss a pair of scoreless innings to begin his night, things quickly went south for the righty. Columbus tagged Daniel for one run in the third inning, four runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. On the flip side, Davis did manage to notch eight strikeouts, so that could be a silver lining, if there were one.

Meanwhile, things weren’t going much better at the plate for the Stripers. All told, the Stripers managed just six hits on the night, only one of which was for extra bases — a double from Cal Conley.

(41-59) Columbus Clingstones 9, (35-67) Rocket City Trash Pandas 4

Patrick Clohisy, RF: 4-5, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 RDrew Compton, 1B: 3-4, 3B, 2 RBIJose Suarez, SP: 4 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, BB, 5 K

Multiple Clingstones drove in at least two runs and Jose Suarez struck out five batters in four innings in his start to lead Columbus to a win over Rocket City on Wednesday.

The Clingstones struck first in this one as Jim Jarvis doubled home Patrick Clohisy to give Columbus an early 1-0 lead. Three batters later, Drew Compton tripled into center field to bring home Jarvis and David McCabe to extend the lead to 3-0.

From that point forward, it was all Clingstones. Rocket City managed to cut their deficit to 3-2 after plating a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, but Columbus quickly got those runs back and then some in the home half of the fifth.

Clohisy — who went 4-5 with a pair of RBI — led off the frame with a single and later came around to score on a McCabe double along with Lizandro Espinoza to make it a 5-2 game. McCabe then crossed the plate after a pair of wild pitches allowed him to score from second.

Columbus got some insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth as Adam Zebrowski and Geraldo Quintero scored on a two-RBI single from Clohisy, extending the lead to 8-3. E.J. Exposito later came home on an Espinoza sacrifice fly to give the Clingstones a 9-3 lead.

While the Trash Pandas plated an additional run in their final at-bat, Blane Abeyta held Rocket City to just the one run to slam the door and give Columbus the win.

(42-59) Rome Emperors 8, (52-51) Greenville Drive 9

Justin Janas, RF: 2-5, 2B, 4 RBIColby Jones, SS: 4-5, 3 RMason Guerra, 1B: 1-4, HR, RBI, RLuke Sinnard, SP: 4 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K

Six lead changes, 18 combined hits and 17 total runs scored. Needless to say this game had plenty of offense. Unfortunately, Rome came out on the wrong side as the Emperors ultimately lost by a 9-8 final.

Justin Janas put Rome on the scoreboard first as he singled home Colby Jones in the top of the first in what would be the first of four RBI for Janas in this one.

On the mound, starter Luke Sinnard didn’t have his best stuff, but it was enough to keep Rome in the game. Across four innings of work, Sinnard gave up three runs while issuing three walks and three strikeouts.

Trailing 3-1, Rome retook the lead in the top of the sixth thanks in large part to Isaiah Drake, who plated Colby Jones on a double and actually came around to score himself after the Greenville catcher threw the ball away. Tied at 3-3, Mason Guerra smoked a 1-0 pitch over the left center field fence, giving the Emperors the 4-3 lead.

While Rome tacked on one run in the seventh as Luis Sanchez scored on a Drake RBI- single, and three runs in the ninth — thanks to a bases-clearing double from Janas — the bullpen couldn’t seem to keep the Drive off the base paths in the late going.

Isaac Gallegos was tasked with closing out the win, but ultimately loaded the bases before Justin Long was called on to get the final out. However, Long proceeded to walk the in the final two runs in back-to-back at-bats as Greenville literally walked off Rome.

(53-48) Augusta GreenJackets 14, (55-47) Charleston RiverDogs 2

Eric Hartman, CF: 3-4, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R, BBCody Miller, SS: 2-4, 2 RBI, RJohn Gil, 3B: 3-5, 2 RBI, 2 RLuis Guanipa, RF: 1-5, HR, RBI, 2 RCam Caminiti, SP: 5 IP, 2 H, ER, 2 BB, 8 K

Augusta rattled off their largest win of the season on Wednesday after seven GreenJackets drove in at least one run and starter Cam Caminiti continued his brilliance by dominating the Charleston lineup in the 14-2 victory.

While the offense was excellent, let’s start by focusing on Caminiti who struck out eight batters in five innings of work while only giving up one run on two hits on the night.

Simply put, Caminiti has been excellent since joining the GreenJackets. In nine starts, the 18-year-old has posted a 2.29 ERA in 35.1 innings pitched. Caminiti is also averaging a whopping 12.9 K/9 rate over that stretch. What makes those numbers even more impressive, is that he’s striking out batters at a significant clip without really utilizing his curveball — which is arguably his best pitch.

While Caminiti was doing his thing, the Augusta offense blew up for 14 runs on 12 hits on the night.

Eric Hartman led the way by going 3-4 with a double and three RBI while also scoring a pair of runs himself. Cody Miller continued his scorching start to his professional career, going 2-4 with a pair of RBI in this one as well. With Wednesday’s performance, Miller raised his OPS to .918 while also giving him 5 runs driven in in just four games played thus far.

Other offensive standouts in this one includes John Gil who went 3-5 and plated two runs, along with Luis Guanipa who launched his first home run with Augusta.
