I missed this yesterday in all the transactions, but right-hander Walker Powell was promoted from Double-A Knoxville to Triple-A Iowa.
The Iowa Cubs were excommunicated by the St. Paul Saints (Twins), 6-5.
Starter Brandon Birdsell took the loss after he gave up six runs on six hits over 4.2 innings. Three of the six runs were unearned but, the error was Birdsell’s own that opened the gates. So as I always like to say, were they really all that unearned? In any case, Birdsell struck out five and walked two.
Left fielder Kevin Alcántara hit a massive three-run home run in the third inning, his 14th on the year. Alcántara was 1 for 4 with a walk.
DH Carlos Pérez went 1 for 4 with an RBI double. He also walked once and scored on Alcántara’s home run.
Catcher Moisés Ballesteros was 1 for 4 and was hit by a pitch. He left the game for pinch runner Owen Caissie, who hadn’t played since he got hit by a pitch on Tuesday.
No score in the middle of the fifth inning when the rains came. The suspended game will be finished tomorrow followed by a seven-inning game.
The South Bend Cubs got crowned by the Ft. Wayne TinCaps (Padres), 8-3.
Kevin Valdez started and took the loss. Valdez surrendered five runs on six hits over 3.1 innings. Two of those six hits were home runs. Valdez struck out three and walked two.
First baseman Brian Kalmer connected on a two-run home run in the fourth inning. It was his sixth home run of the year. Kalmer went 1 for 4.
Catcher Ariel Armas was a perfect 3 for 3 with a double and a walk. He scored on Kalmer’s home run.
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans swept a doubleheader from the Fredericksburg Nationals, 9-0 and 5-3 in eight innings.
In game one, Nazier Mulé turned in his best start of the season, going five scoreless innings and allowing just two hits. Mulé struck out five and more importantly, walked just two as he grabbed his third win of the year.
Brayden Spears finished off the seven-inning shutout with two scoreless, allowing just two hits. He struck out two and walked no one, although he did hit one batter. He also balked twice.
Center fielder Kane Kepley is off to a great start to his pro career, going 2 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base. (He was caught stealing once too.) Kepley scored twice.
First baseman Matt Halbach was 2 for 2 with a double, a walk and a sacrifice fly. Halbach had two runs batted in.
Kevin Camacho started game two and held the F-Nats scoreless through five innings of work. Camacho gave up two hits, walked two and struck out five.
Victor Zarraga gave up two runs in the top of the seventh that forced extra innings. His final line was two runs, one earned, on two hits over two innings. Zarraga struck out four, walked one and hit one batter.
Landon Ginn gave up an unearned run in the top of the eighth, but got the win when the Birds stormed back in the bottom of the inning. Ginn allowed one unearned run on one hit over one inning. He struck out two and walked no one.
Center fielder Christian Olivo hit a walk-off three run home run in the bottom of the eighth, his second of the year. Olivo was 2 for 4 with a double and the home run. He scored twice.
Second baseman Ty Southisene drove in the first two runs of the game when he beat out a two-out infield single in the bottom of the sixth. Olivo had some heads-up baserunning on the play and scored the second run from second on an infield chopper. Southisene was 1 for 4.
Third baseman Angel Cepeda was 2 for 4.
Here’s that two-run single with Olivo scoring from second base.
And here’s Olivo ending the game.
