Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 9, Rochester Red Wings (Nationals) 8
Norfolk starter Roansy Contreras limited Rochester to only three hits over five innings of one-run ball. The Orioles claimed and DFA’d Contreras multiple times during the offseason before eventually sneaking him through waivers. Despite their efforts to keep the former Pirates prospect in the organization, the O’s have yet to provide Contreras an opportunity to start or pitch out of the bullpen with the big league club.
With both Samuel Basallo and Dylan Beavers out of the lineup, a few other prospects provided the power. Jud Fabian smacked his 14th home run, Reed Trimble hit his first Triple-A homer, and José Barrero provided a pinch-hit grand slam.
Barrero’s blast provided the Tides a 9-1 advantage in the bottom of the sixth, but Norfolk’s bullpen made things way too interesting. Matt Bowman allowed two runs (one earned) over an inning of work, and CÃonel Pérez surrendered four runs and recorded only two outs in relief. Anthony Nunez replaced Pérez and managed to secure the final out to clinch a 9-8 victory.
Ryan Mountcastle went 0-for-3 in another rehab appearance.
Double-A: Akron RubberDucks (Guardians) 5, Chesapeake Baysox 3
Trey Gibson dazzled once again with six shutout innings. The six-foot-five righty allowed five hits, struck out nine, and did not walk a batter. He now holds a 1.55 ERA over 52.1 innings at Double-A.
Bowie jumped out to a three-run lead with runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings. Adam Retzbach got things started with an RBI single, Anthony Servideo drove in a run with a single in the fourth, and Creed Willems added the third run with an RBI groundout.
Preston Johnson coughed up the lead with a four-run seventh inning, and Wyatt Cheney allowed an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.
The Baysox managed six singles in the contest but did not record an extra-base hit.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 10, Wilmington Blue Rocks (Nationals) 0
Aberdeen reached double digits with all 10 runs coming in the first five innings. The IronBirds jumped out to a four-run lead in the first before adding another run in the second. Aberdeen tacked on three more in the fourth before capping the offense with a pair of runs in the fifth.
Ethan Anderson drove in half of Aberdeen’s runs with a pair of singles and a two-run double. Anderson and Enrique Bradfield Jr. both finished 3-for-5 with doubles, but Bradfield did not gain the RBI opportunities from the leadoff spot.
Griff O’Ferrall scored three times after reaching base with a single, double, and a base on balls. Both Thomas Sosa and Elis Cuevas drove in a pair of runs.
Four Aberdeen pitchers combined for the shutout. Starter Yeiber Cartaya allowed only one hit in 4.1 innings. Jacob Cravey closed out the contest with a pair of scoreless frames.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 7, Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Astros) 2
Delmarva used eight singles, nine walks, and 11 stolen bases to secure the win. Luis Almeyda and Braylin Tavera combined to go 4-for-8 with 4 RBIs. The Shorebirds also scored on a wild pitch, a balk, and a pair of sacrifice flies.
Starter Michael Caldon tossed 4.1 innings of one-run ball. Jacob Stretch allowed the other run in his Delmarva debut, while Chipper Menard and Sayer Diederich posted zeros.
