CLEVELAND — The Milwaukee Brewers arrived in Ohio still looking for their groove at the plate, in the field and on the mound. Turns out it didn’t just wash in on the shores of Lake Erie.
A misplay in center field, six walks from the pitching staff and and a small village stranded on base made for a cloudy evening at Progressive Field for the Brewers, who still are searching for their groove following a 5-0 loss to the Cleveland Guardians on May 12.
The loss was the fourth in five games for Milwaukee, which dropped to 20-22. The Brewers offense has scored 11 runs across those five games and has the fewest hits in Major League Baseball in May.
They weren’t without chances against the Guardians, though. In the top of the third, a two-out rally loaded the bases for Caleb Durbin but he grounded out to third and , who dropped to 4 for 35 at the plate in May. A William Contreras double play erased an opportunity with two on in the fifth, then Durbin popped up to short with two more on the pond and two outs in the sixth.
In all, the Brewers stranded 11 runners.
Freddy Peralta reaches 1,000 strikeouts but gets the loss
With a swinging strikeout of Daniel Schneemann to cap the fifth, Brewers starter Freddy Peralta made franchise history by becoming the fastest pitcher to reach 1,000 career strikeouts.
Peralta joined Yovani Gallardo, the all-time Brewers leader with 1,226 strikeouts, Ben Sheets and Teddy Higuera as the franchise’s only pitchers to reach the mark. Peralta, though, achieved it in only 804 â…” innings, becoming by far the fastest to do it.
It was Peralta’s third strikeout of the night and came on a changeup, whereas his previous two were on fastballs.
Peralta allowed one more run on a Kyle Manzardo single in the sixth and was removed after 5 â…“ innings. The four runs on his ledger were the most he’s given up in a game this season.
Jackson Chourio’s disastrous misplay
Peralta appeared headed for an escape to a lengthy fourth inning when he got Gabriel Arias to hit a fly just shy of the warning track with two outs.
The only problem? Jackson Chourio got a bad read on the ball initially and after taking a banana peel route, reached up and couldn’t haul the ball in, missing it by a few inches over his left shoulder. The miscue led to a bases-clearing double that put Cleveland ahead, 3-0.
The ball had a 95% catch probability, according to Statcast. Chourio has been playing center field regularly since Garrett Mitchell went on the injured list April 27 with an oblique strain; the Brewers have preferred to keep Sal Frelick at his Gold Glove position in right even though he’s, in greater likelihood, a better defensive center fielder than Chourio.
Guardians starter Ben Lively leaves with injury
The Guardians got a bad break to open inning, as starter Ben Lively was removed from the game after throwing a couple warmup pitches. The right-hander had allowed only one hit through three scoreless before the Guardians training staff visited him briefly on the mound. He was removed with right forearm inflammation.
Jakob Junis, who spent part of last year with Milwaukee, took over and contributed to the Brewers’ third shutout loss of the year. Kolby Allard went three innings, scattering three hits and two walks, before Cade Smith and Hunter Gaddis closed out the game.
