Introducing the 2025 All-News-Herald Baseball Third Team

SETH ANDERSON | Taylor: A relatively young Taylor program took an important step forward this past spring thanks to the continued development of Seth Anderson. An all-Downriver League honoree, Anderson was something of a super utility for the Griffins. In addition to his defensive versatility, the junior was also one of the team’s more consistent bats, hitting .338 with 26 knocks and 14 runs batted in.

KALE HARRIS | Taylor Prep: Just across town, the team at Taylor Prep got another strong breakout season from its best do-everything player in Kale Harris. An all-Charter School Conference and all-district recipient, Harris was the key igniter for everything the Tigers did. The sophomore turned in a 1.081 OPS after collecting 22 hits, 27 RBIs, and 13 stolem bases while tallying a 1.82 ERA and over 100 strikeouts in just 46 innings of work.

EASTON DEMERS | Trenton: Though they see their two best pitchers graduate and move on, Trenton may already have viable replacements to assume those roles with Easton Demers joined alongside classmate and first-team all-News-Herald honoree Easton Curry. An outfielder as well for the Trojans, Demers turned in an ERA just under 3.00 in 24 innings pitched. The junior was also a steady bat, finishing with an .892 OPS and a dozen RBIs.

KADEN APPEL | Allen Park Inter-City Baptist: No stranger to fielding eighth grade talent on the varsity teams at their school, the baseball program at Inter-City Baptist saw a pair of soon-to-be high schoolers shine this past season. One of those such players was Kaden Appel, who like his classmate and second-team all-area nominee Easton Anthony patrolled the outfield. In addition to compiling a .992 OPS, Appel also figures to pitch more for the Chargers in the years to come after logging 57 Ks in 32 IP.

JAKOB FURKAS | New Boston Huron: A midseason injuryunfortunately put a damper on the pitching resume for Jakob Furkas this past spring. Still, Furkas was able to play and be one of Huron’s more prolific hitters and run producers. The sophomore finished with a .349 BA and a .949 OPS, smacking 30 hits — eight of which went for extra-bases — while also driving in 28 runs. In his small sample size on the mound, he posted a microscopic 0.25 ERA in 27 innings.

DAVID RIDDLE | Flat Rock: Staying in the Class of 2027, Huron’s league foe just down the road at Flat Rock has one of the best hitting underclassman in the entire local area in David Riddle. An all-conference honoree for the newly-minted league champion Rams, Riddle figures to be a primary source for the team’s offense in the next two years. The sophomore outfielder compiled an OPS well over 1.000 after collecting 25 hits, 15 RBIs, and 14 stolen bags.

DANTE PERRY | Brownstown Woodhaven: The “best defensive center fielder in the area.” Those were the words of Woodhaven head coach Corey Farner when describing his outfielder Dante Perry. A third-team all-area honoree in 2024, Perry oftentimes utilized his speed and athleticism on the basepaths as well. The junior all-district nominee finished with an OPS approaching .800, racking up close to 30 hits and 24 stolen bases.

NOAH BOROWSKI | Gibraltar Carlson: It can be hard for underclassmen to step into the varsity arena and excel right away, much less do so with calmness and discipline. That is what Noah Borowski accomplished this past season, giving Carlson something to build around for the future. Both an infielder and a pitcher for the Marauders, the freshman Borowski hit .360 and drove in 21 runs while also only striking out seven times all season.

TALEN VANHOVEL | Trenton: Runs were once again hard to come by for any team facing Trenton this past season and Talen Vanhovel was yet another arm that hitters wanted no part of. An all-district standout in the postseason for the district champion Trojans, Vanhovel finished with an ERA just under 2.00 and averaged a little more than a strikeout per inning (48 K in 42.1 IP). The senior also hit .333 with seven doubles and 11 RBIs.

ZACK HOFFMAN | Wyandotte Roosevelt: The Class of 2027 appears to be a strong one for the program at Roosevelt and Zack Hoffman can make a case for being the best of the bunch, at least on the hitting front. An all-district honoree, Hoffman served a “pivotal role in the offense” for the Bears and head coach Brandon Justice. The sophomore led the team in both hits (35) and RBIs (19) while also playing steady defense at first base.

KALEB CHANDLER | Ecorse: Drew Covington has built one of the less-heralded but more consistent programs locally over at Ecorse in recent years. The head man for the Red Raiders may have found his ace for the next couple years in Kaleb Chandler. The sophomore turned in a strong 2.26 ERA and .122 opponents’ batting average in just under 30 innings of work. He also posted a .955 OPS himself offensively with 19 RBIs.

BRYCEN KIMES | Allen Park Cabrini: A decade-long weight was lifted off the shoulders of Cabrini, who took home their first district championship in 10 years this past season. Arguably the most important piece to the Monarchs’ success was the two-way play of senior Brycen Kimes. The team’s resident all-Catholic nominee in the Catholic League, Kimes posted a sub-3.00 ERA and 76 Ks in 48 IP while also hitting .270 and driving in 14 runs.

TRISTAN SPENCER | Brownstown Woodhaven: It’s scary for opposing local schools to think that Woodhaven may only get even better with a strong group of underclassmen in the fold. Tristan Spencer is very much part of that group and appears to only be scratching the surface. An all-DRL and all-district performer for the Warriors, the freshman Spencer had an .806 OPS with a dozen XBHs and 36 runs batted in, while also spinning over 40 innings to the tune of a sub-2.00 ERA.

CARSON RICE | Riverview: One of the best up-and-coming catchers locally comes in the form of Carson Rice, whose “blocking and throwing ability helped pitchers” according to Riverview head coach Chris Gajewski. An all-Huron League and all-district honoree, Rice’s efforts both at and behind the dish were key in the Pirates’ late-season surge to earn a district crown. The sophomore hit .290 with extra-base knocks by season’s end while also throwing out almost 30 percent of would-be base stealers.

MEMPHIS DAVENPORT | Southgate Anderson: After breaking out as a freshman in 2024, Anderson’s Memphis Davenport followed up with an equally solid sophomore campaign. An all-DRL and all-district recipient, Davenport “came up with clutch hits throughout the year,” according to Titans head coach Andy Green. The sophomore finished with a .300 batting average, 10 doubles, and 20 runs batted in.
