The New York Yankees host the Houston Astros tonight at Yankee Stadium to open a three-game series steeped in bad blood.

Jose Altuve and the newly reunited Carlos Correa will undoubtedly be greeted with Bronx Cheers. The bitterness of this rivalry endures as long as the Yankees’ World Series drought continues.

This could be a postseason preview — if the Yankees can get their act together. They’ve collapsed from 17 games over .500 earlier this year to just seven today, hitting .206 with a 5.47 team ERA in August. That skid has left them 6.5 games out of first in the AL East.

The 64–51 Astros are doing well by comparison, though trouble could come their way too. They lead the AL West, but just by 1.5 games, with the second-place Seattle Mariners surging. Seattle has won four straight since loading up at the trade deadline.

New York turns to rookie Cam Schlittler, coming off five solid innings of two-run ball in his last start. Houston’s righty-heavy lineup could play in his favor — right-handed hitters are batting .258 against him this year compared to .304 for lefties — but the Astros present a stiffer test.

For Houston, Hunter Brown takes the mound in the midst of a season worthy of Cy Young consideration if not for Tarik Skubal’s dominance. He’ll look to keep a sputtering Yankees offense quiet, while New York’s leaky bullpen — anchored by the inconsistent Devin Williams — remains a late-inning liability.

Prediction: Astros 5, Yankees 2. Schlittler gives up three runs before the bullpen yields two more. Brown silences the Yankees’ bats in a comfortable Astros win.
