The last time the Orioles played a game at Camden Yards, their lineup included Ryan O’Hearn, Cedric Mullins, and Colton Cowser, with Ramón Laureano and Tyler O’Neill as late-inning replacements. Tonight, in their first home game since the trade deadline, their lineup is…uh…different.

O’Hearn, Mullins, and Laureano (along with Ramón Urías) are no longer Orioles. And Cowser and O’Neill, who’d been starting regularly since those other guys were traded, both were placed on the injured list earlier today, the former with a concussion and the latter with right wrist inflammation. It’s O’Neill’s third IL stint of the season and Cowser’s second.

As a result, the home fans might need a program (are programs still a thing?) to recognize tonight’s patchwork lineup. Ryan Noda, claimed on waivers less than a week ago, makes his first start as an Oriole, facing the team he played for from 2023-24. It’ll be only his third career start in right field. Also making his O’s debut is veteran outfielder Greg Allen, whom the Birds signed to a major league deal this afternoon. The journeyman Allen has 304 games of big league experience but none since 2023. He becomes the 58th different player to appear for the 2025 Orioles, and it’s only the first week of August.

Maddeningly, even with two outfielders landing on the IL, the O’s still refused to call up Dylan Beavers. I don’t know what the Orioles are thinking by keeping a promising young outfield prospect in the minors when literally their entire outfield has either been traded or injured. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this is an unserious franchise. Light-hitting Jordyn Adams was recalled instead.

Meanwhile, a familiar face returns to the Orioles lineup as Ryan Mountcastle has been activated from the 60-day IL. He’s been sidelined since May 30 with a hamstring strain and wasn’t hitting particularly well before that. A lineup that features Mountcastle, Noda, Allen, and Dylan Carlson is probably not going to strike fear into opposing pitchers, but hey, anything to keep Dylan Beavers in the minors, right?
