First and foremost, let’s give a round of applause to Drake Baldwin after his outstanding performance tonight, strengthening his case for National League Rookie of the Year.
A two-homer night for the rookie, along with five RBIs, first started in the bottom of the first, going yard for the Atlanta Braves to put them on the scoreboard. Marcell Ozuna immediately followed with a homer as well.
Baldwin’s other was in the bottom of the sixth, making it a three-run blast, decreasing the Miami Marlins’ four-run lead by one (6-5).
Oh, but that’s just where it started.
Baldwin also clinched an RBI single, bringing Nacho Alvarez Jr. in for the sixth run in the bottom of the seventh, now tying with the Marlins (6-6) after enduring a quiet four innings with only two runs on the board.
Ozuna followed that up once again with an RBI single to bring Jurickson Profar in to silence their opponent. And finally, the team scored another on a wild pitch in the eighth to clinch the win 8-6.
The Marlins kicked off with six unanswered runs, only to fall to the Braves’ six unanswered runs later in the game, courtesy of the hard work the team put in to push past their struggles and follow suit with hot bats.
This win not only snapped their overall and homestead losing streak, but also prevented the Marlins from reaching .500, as they are now two games behind the midway point.
Carlos Carrasco (5.2 IP/6 ER/9 H/ 2K/ 2 BB) had a few struggles he had to get in front of in the beginning, giving up five unanswered runs by the second inning, but remained steady going deeper into the game by making adjustments.
And of course, the crowd erupted into cheers when Raisel Iglesias came in at the top of the ninth for Dylan Lee to close out with the save.
Fun fact: opposing pitcher Eury Pérez has never beaten the Braves in the past two times he’s played against the team, and this loss just brought his record 0-3 against them.
The Braves were also on the brink of losing their first six consecutive home games if they’d lost this matchup.
A lot of saves that the Braves needed to kick this series off occurred tonight
Now, this isn’t to take away from the much-needed win tonight… but the question remains…can they keep up the momentum to do it again?
Well, I guess we’ll have to see as Bryce Elder takes the mound in an attempt to lead the team to a win in game two.
Until then, to be continued…
