PHOENIX — Key hits from Blaze Alexander and Corbin Carroll, along with a quality start from Zac Gallen, put the Colorado Rockies away in a largely stress-free 6-1 win for the Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Friday.
Arizona (55-61) piled onto the recent stretch of misery for Colorado, which has dropped five straight games by a combined score of 60-12.
Alexander doubled home three runs in the first inning with a first-pitch rope into the left-field corner off Rockies southpaw starter Austin Gomber to take a 3-0 lead.
“ I was being aggressive,” Alexander said. “I was actually looking for a fastball, just driving it to center, right-center and it ended up being a cutter. Kinda just ran right into my barrel right down the line … I was pretty hyped up.”
Alexander then hit a solo shot to the opposite field in his next plate appearance, as he drove in four runs for the second time in his career.
He has recorded hits in six of seven games since the trade deadline, when the D-backs traded Eugenio Suarez and opened up opportunities for Alexander to play regularly.

Carroll blew the game open with a 424-foot long ball that just stayed inside the right-field foul pole in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Carroll has 24 home runs, one away from matching his career high of 25 from 2023.
Arizona only recorded six hits, but the three big hits proved to be enough. The Rockies (30-85), meanwhile, have allowed five or more runs in 13 straight games.
“It was clearly Blaze’s night, it was four RBIs, the big three-run double,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “We built that inning and he cashed in for us. He picked up his teammate. … Then he stays on a ball and hits a long home run to right field.
“Corbin sits on a breaking ball and hammers it. So it’s just a nice day. It was a good win after an off day, after a couple tough losses. It’s nice to get on the other side of it.”
Zac Gallen grinds through quality start
It took Gallen 24 pitches and a Lourdes Gurriel Jr. sliding catch the get through the first inning unscathed — not helped by a Gallen throwing error to start the game — and the Rockies drew blood with a run in the second.
Gallen did not allow another hit from innings 3-5, giving the Diamondbacks a chance to expand their lead.
He walked three batters and did not get much swing-and-miss (six), but the balls put in play were weakly hit (77.7 mph) and he managed to plow through six innings with the one earned run.
“We used a lot of sinkers and changeups,” Gallen said. “(Catcher James McCann) and I were on the same page all night. I shook once. I felt like we were just kind of establishing the inner half … They had a hard time laying off the sinker, so we just kept going in there and taking weak contact, taking outs.”
Gurriel helped out again with a running grab to end the sixth inning.
In two starts since the trade, Gallen has thrown 12 innings with three earned runs.
The Diamondbacks and Rockies had more in common coming into Friday’s game than the former would care for. Both teams entered Friday 3-7 over their last 10 games, 8-12 over their 20 and 11-19 over their last 30. The difference in those 30 games: Arizona’s run differential was -21, while Colorado’s was a putrid -95.
The Diamondbacks were not flawless on Friday, but they made enough key defensive plays with some timely slug to make it a simple win.
Arizona moved to 5-2 this year against Colorado.
“Obviously we dropped two tough ones against the Padres, so for us to bounce back after an off day, to be able to come in here and set the tone for this series, it’s good,” Gallen said. “I think we played really well, did everything we needed to do to win a baseball game.”
