Rockies Report, Game 115:

Kyle Karros singled and brought home a run in his first major-league at-bat, but that represented the sum total of Colorado’s offense Friday night as the Rockies dropped their fifth-straight game, this one by a 6-1 count to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Promoted from AAA Albuquerque earlier Friday, Karros lined a Zac Gallen pitch to right field in the second inning, scoring Warming Bernabel from second base to bring the Rox back within 3-1.

But that was all for the Rox as they failed to generate much against Gallen and three Diamondbacks relievers who combined for three innings of two-hit, shutout ball to close out the night.

Karros worked at third base and hit eighth, finishing the night 1-for-3 with a walk. He was one of six Rockies to get a hit, but no Colorado player had multiple hits in the game.

Both teams had six hits, and Colorado’s batters took four walks, one more than Arizona, which also saw one batter reach when plunked by Juan Mejia. But the parity in baserunners didn’t reflect on the scoreboard, as the Rox went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, while the Diamondbacks went 2-for-5.

Colorado is 30-85.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

It wasn’t the gopher ball that got Austin Gomber in trouble early on Friday night, but eventually that bugaboo reared its ugly head in what would become his sixth loss without a win to his name so far this season.

In the first inning, a pair of walks and a single by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. loaded the bases before Blaze Alexander cleared them with a double to put the Rox in a 3-0 hole. The rest of the damage was done via a pair of home runs — a solo blast by Alexander to lead off the fourth inning and a two-run shot by Corbin Carroll in the fifth.

Gomber was able to make it through six innings to save some wear on the bullpen before handing it off to Nick Anderson in the seventh inning. But he has now allowed at least one home run in seven-consecutive starts and has given up 12 in 10 starts, with a HR/9 rate of 2.17, which would be the worst figure of his career to date.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Carroll plated Ketel Marte with his 24th home run of the season, pushing Arizona’s lead to 6-1 in the fifth inning.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 7 — Runs mustered by the Rockies in their last four games after they piled up 30 in last weekend’s three-game series against the Pirates.

WHAT’S NEXT: Bradley Blalock takes the hill as the Rox try to even the series. Eduardo Rodriguez gets the call for the Diamondbacks; the Rox have an all-time .312 batting average at his expense. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. MDT.
