BROOKVILLE — Two big innings producing 11 runs, the Brookville Lady Raiders softball team was able to make that hold off A-C Valley/Union which scored in five of its seven at-bats Monday afternoon on Senior Day at Blake Field at Northside Park.
The final math had the Lady Raiders edging the Falcon Knights, 13-12, to even their record to 8-8. One scheduled game remains weather-permitting Tuesday at Bradford.
“That’s a hitting team and we finally battled for all seven innings like we’ve been preaching since day one,” said Lady Raiders head coach Cliff Park said of ACV/Union. “So it was some guts and grit and we finally pulled it out.”
Most likely, the Lady Raiders are playoff-bound in the Class 2A bracket while ACV/Union dropped to 6-10.
Trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the third, the Lady Raiders sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs. Then after the Falcon Knights scored four in the top of the fourth, the Lady Raiders sent 11 batters to the plate to grab the lead for good with six more runs for an 11-6 lead.
Two more runs in the bottom of the fifth hiked Brookville’s lead to 13-6 before the Falcon Knights rallied to within one run with five more in the sixth and one in the seventh to set the final.
The Falcon Knights outscored the Lady Raiders, 17-13, but made less plays defensively than the hosts that was the difference. A year ago on the same field, it was the ACV/Union edging Brookville, 17-16.
Two unearned runs put ACV/Union up 2-0 before the Lady Raiders’ first big inning in the third. Cadence Suhan doubled, Megan McKinney tripled, and Kailin Bowser singled with one out to tie it at 2-2. Then two-out RBI singles from Jordan Daisley, Makaya McLaughlin and Lily Plyler made it 5-2.
Alyvia Hartzell’s two-out single and Kya Wetzel’s RBI single highlighted the Falcon Knights’ four-run fourth.
Then in the fourth, Alyssa Tollini singled in a run and McLaughlin singled in two before Plyler delivered a two-run double. Suhan made it 11-6 with a two-out RBI single.
A two-out error by the Falcon Knights set up Julie Greeley’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the fifth to make it 13-6.
ACV/Union’s five-run top of sixth went unanswered in the bottom of the sixth, but the lead was big enough for Brookville.
In the seventh, Lady Raiders starter Alyssa Tollini gave up a leadoff triple to Brailagh Claypoole, who scored on a two-out single by Kya Wetzel, but that’s as far as the rally got and the Lady Raiders held on for the win.
McLaughlin, Plyler, Greeley and Suhan all had two hits for the Lady Raiders while Lily Hayden and Wetzel both finished with three for the Falcon Knights.
Tollini got the win, striking out three and walking one. Nine of the 12 runs surrendered were unearned.
Ashlyn Walker, the first of two pitchers, the first of two pitchers for Union/ACV, took the loss. She went 3 2/3 innings, giving up 12 hits and 11 runs while walking four and striking out two.
