Jacob Misiorowski rallies Brewers past Cubs in Game 1 of series
Jacob Misiorowski pushed through a rough first inning but rallied the Brewers in an eventually win over the Cubs at American Family Field in Milwaukee on July 28, 2025.
They’re the hottest team in baseball and the hottest ticket in town.
With baseball fever at its highest temperatures in Milwaukee during the regular season in years, the Brewers returned home from a perfect road trip to an over-capacity attendance of 43,469 on Friday, Aug. 8, that had American Family Field bursting at the seams physically and audibly.
The Brewers did nothing to quell the temperature, grinding out a win in their own unique way, 3-2, over the New York Mets, capped by center fielder Blake Perkins throwing out the tying run at home for the final out of the game that sent the loudest, largest crowd of the season into an eruption heard all the way in The Big Apple.
BOX SCORE: Brewers 3, Mets 2
They notched only four hits, were hitless with runners in scoring position and produced the eventual winning run with a hitless rally in the fifth. On the mound, Brandon Woodruff gave up a pair of solo home runs but nothing more as he and the Brewers gave the Mets no wiggle room. When New York made a mistake, the hosts capitalized.
And when Jeff McNeil blooped a flare that had game-tying hit written all over it to center with two outs in the ninth, Perkins made the defensive play of the season. The Brewers center fielder uncorked a firehose toward home, a one-hopper that hit catcher William Contreras on the target. Contreras applied a deft tag to Marte, slapping leather on the back of his jersey.
An unreal finish for an unreal run. It might just be an unreal team, too.
No déjà vu in the ninth inning
It was undoubtedly on the minds of every last fan in every last nook and cranny in the ballpark. And don’t think it escaped the minds of those in both dugouts, either.
Pete Alonso at the plate in the ninth inning against the Brewers closer, trying to close out a save in a tight ballgame.
This time, Trevor Megill did what Devin Williams couldn’t in Game 3 — the soul-sucking, heart-wrenching Game 3 — of the 2024 wild-card series, retiring Alonso. After a first-pitch foul deep down the right-field line sent a momentary moment of panic into the park, Megill got Alonso to ground out to second for the first out of the ninth.
A two-out Starling Marte double made it dicey, a matter that McNeil only exacerbated by lining a ball to center that Perkins played on one hop before releasing a one-hopper of his own.
The throw, Perkins’ second walk-off home plate outfield assist in the last two seasons, pushed Milwaukee’s win streak to seven.
Brandon Woodruff puts his head down and goes to work
It was the type of start that embodies what Woodruff is all about.
Having given up two solo home runs before facing his sixth batter of the game while working with diminished velocity, the Brewers right-hander found a way to battle through a rough start and finished his night with dominance.
Woodruff pitched in the seventh inning for the first time since his shutout on September 11, 2023 and retired the final 10 batters he faced before turning the ball over to the bullpen following the completion of the seventh inning.
He surrendered only on hit aside from the homers, a single in the fourth that was immediately erased by a double play ground ball.
In six starts in the big leagues since returning from shoulder surgery, Woodruff has yet to allow more than two runs and is sporting a 2.29 ERA with 45 strikeouts to six walks in 35 â…“ innings.
To take the lead, no hits needed for Brewers
In typical Brewers fashion, they followed Brice Turang’s game-tying homer in the fifth by manufacturing a rally to take the lead that didn’t include a base hit.
Joey Ortiz worked Mets starter Kodai Senga for a walk in a patient plate appearance, then moved to second on an ultimate Sal Frelick at-bat: a swing that resulted in catcher’s interference. After William Contreras drew a walk to chase Senga, reliever Brooks Raley nicked Issac Collins in the foot with an 0-2 sweeper to give the Brewers the lead.
Brice Turang crushes a game-tying homer
Call it grown-man power. Or the power of friendship. Or the power of the pocket pancake. Whatever it is, Turang has found his damage stroke at the plate of late.
Turang blasted his ninth homer of the year, extending his career high, in the bottom of the fifth off Mets starter Kodai Senga by whistling a first-pitch cutter almost to the back wall of the stadium in right-center to tie the game at 2-2.
Just the second hit of the night off Senga, it was Turang’s third home run of the week, which began with his first multi-homer game since his days at Santiago High School in Corona, California.
Juan Soto tomahawks first-inning home run
In an impressive piece of hitting, Mets right fielder Juan Soto delivered a first-inning home run by getting under a Woodruff fastball above the letters and lofting it high into the Milwaukee sky and out to right field.
Soto’s 27th home run of the year, which opened the scoring, had a launch angle of 42 degrees and just kept sailing and sailing until it landed at the back of the field-level patio area in right.
Marte followed with a second solo homer in as many innings, another towering shot off a fastball that was the seventh home run Woodruff has allowed this year despite only giving up nine runs in total.
