Triple-A: Rochester Red Wings (Nationals) 8, Norfolk Tides 4
Dylan Beavers, bypassed for a promotion once again for the likes of Greg Allen and Jordyn Adams, reached base three more times on a single and two walks. His OPS is .961. He also had an outfield assist, throwing out a runner at third base from left field. Seriously, get this guy to the majors already! Samuel Basallo went 1-for-5 with an RBI single and Terrin Vavra drove in two.
Kyle Bradish had another rocky rehab start for the Tides, at least in terms of results. He worked 3.2 innings and gave up six hits, two walks, and three runs, striking out four. But the most important thing is that he’s back on a mound and presumably feeling healthy. The O’s can afford to take their time with Bradish as he shakes off the rust. Of Norfolk’s five pitchers in this game, the only one who didn’t allow a run was Chayce McDermott. The righty prospect, recently moved to relief, pitched a perfect ninth with a strikeout.
Double-A: Akron RubberDucks (Guardians) 4, Chesapeake Baysox 3
It was a rough day for most Baysox hitters other than Adam Retzbach, who collected three of his team’s five hits. The first baseman was a triple shy of the cycle. But all other Baysox were 2-for-29. Aron Estrada had one of the hits and Anthony Servideo the other, a two-run triple in the ninth that cut the Chesapeake deficit to one. Servideo, representing the tying run, was left stranded at third to end the game.
Starting pitcher Nestor German was OK, giving up three runs, three hits, and three walks in five innings. Reliever Tyson Neighbors, one of the six players acquired in the Ryan O’Hearn/Ramón Laureano trade with San Diego, worked a perfect inning in his second outing in the O’s organization. The Baysox pitching staff got a look at Akron’s Travis Bazzana, the #1 overall pick in the 2024 draft. He went 1-for-3 with a walk.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 2, Wilmington Blue Rocks (Nationals) 1
The IronBirds, like the Baysox, managed only five hits. That included two apiece from the Orioles’ top two picks in last year’s draft, Vance Honeycutt and Griff O’Ferrall. It was the second straight multi-hit effort from Honeycutt, who had done it only once in his previous 26 games. O’Ferrall drove in both Aberdeen runs on an RBI single in the first and RBI double in the third. He also stole two bases, and Honeycutt swiped one. A rehabbing Enrique Bradfield Jr. went 0-for-4 with a steal.
A solid IronBirds pitching staff made the meager run support stand up. Starter Juan Rojas held Wilmington to one run in four innings and long reliever Evan Yates worked four scoreless, despite each giving up five hits. Sandwiched in between was a shutout inning by Carter Baumler, formerly a top-20 O’s prospect who’s trying to work his way back after a litany of injuries.
Low-A: Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Astros) 10, Delmarva Shorebirds 4
Another day, another great performance from outfielder Nate George, who went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. On the negative side, he got picked off once. The Shorebirds had 10 hits but also struck out 11 times to just one walk. They were 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Shortstop Cobb Hightower, another piece of that O’Hearn/Laureano trade, had two hits from the leadoff spot.
Starter Carson Dorsey had a rough go of it, giving up six runs in four innings, though only three were earned. He did pick up seven strikeouts. Relievers Luis Beltrán and Joe Glassey each worked two scoreless, though the game was already decided by then.
